Fistful of Awesome

Imagine the funniest book ever written. Now multiply that by ten, strap a bomb to it, stick it in your pants, and jump off a mountain. That's how funny this book is. Jon Konrath is a comedic genius. He'll turn your sense of humor inside out and punch it in the face. Anyone capable of reading a story like "My Friend, the Jihadist" without laughing 79 times is a soulless Android who was probably programmed by a jihadist. Konrath, I applaud you. This is another whim that paid off big. I ran across Konrath and wanted to check some of his writing out, going for this one because I dug the title. I'm pleased I did because I really got into these stories. Konrath's writing has a lot of raw energy and fluid creativity. A conman motivational speaker Jesus with eerily close religious parallels, a metal head Richard Nixon whose death was only faked, a captain of a Titanic recreation service for those who find erotic pleasure in a ship striking a ...more

Pure madness. Konrath puts on a bizarro writing clinic.

My favorite in here is "Richard F****** Nixon," in which Richard Nixon is still alive and an intense fan of all things metal. And he has no time for young, Yankee-fan punks who try to mug him. Seems strangely realistic.

I was going to write an elaborate gushing review. However, there is single phrase from this book that sums up every reason to read it: Fonzie Porn. Thank you, John.

My third JK book. The first two were flash fiction. This one has short stories. No matter how long or short, you are always in for a wonderfully absurd ride. My favorites were “Richard F**king Nixon”, where the former president is alive and well and a hardcore Dokken fan. “They”, which fully explores the lifestyles of the rich and schizophrenic. And of course “My Friend, The Jihadist”, an Apocalypse Now-esque story about finding out your old D&D buddy is the leader of a terrorist organizatio ...more

While I understand what the author was trying with these stories, I think it comes down to the fact that this collection just wasn't for me.

With the Mad Libs-style writing style, the stories were difficult to follow along with. I suppose there's nothing wrong with this style of writing, it's simply something I didn't care for.

“He set down his chili dog, and after a pondering moment of silence, he replied with words of wisdom I’d never forget: “Fuck women. Fuck school. Fuck money. Go write some books, get a good agent, lift weights, get tattoos, and never do a film with Keanu Reeves.” 4 likes
“My friend Nick preached the ways of his creative writing program: the incredible female:male ratio, his classwork on nun sodomy and pornographic science fiction, and the time he nailed a tenured professor after a lengthy yet erotic argument over the existence of neo-fascism and scatological fantasies in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.” 0 likes
