WHO WOULD HAVE THE POWER NECESSARY TO FORCE DOWN AN INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT HALFWAY TO ITS DESTINATION? AND WHAT WOULD POSSIBLY BE THEIR GOAL IN DOING SO?
The request was simple enough. A former client had booked the fishing trip of a lifetime, a week floating the pristine waters of Patagonia by day and enjoying a luxury cabin by night. The guide he had hired to go with him had backed out at the last second and he was hoping Hawk Tate might be able to fill in. Still weeks away from the start of the Yellowstone season, and never one to shy away from one of the premier fishing spots in the world or a hefty payday, Hawk agrees.
What neither he nor his client could have possibly known was that at that moment in Venezuela, a presidential primary was just heating up. A campaign that was already plenty contentious, it reaches a fevered pitch when anti-American rhetoric is brought to the fore, complete with burning flags and spewing hostility.
Halfway to their destination, the flight Hawk and his friend are on is forced down into Caracas, thrusting them into the middle of an international situation.
A situation that fast goes terribly awry, forcing Hawk back into a life he has so desperately tried to leave behind…
I originally hail from the midwest, growing up in the heart of farm country, and still consider it, along with West Tennessee, my co-home. Between the two, I have a firm belief that football is the greatest of all past-times, sweet tea is really the only acceptable beverage for any occasion, there is not an event on earth that either gym shorts or boots can't be worn to, and that Dairy Queen is the best restaurant on the planet. Further, southern accents are a highly likeable feature on most everybody, English bulldogs sit atop the critter hierarchy, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Saturday night spent catfishing at the lake.
Since leaving the midwest I've been to college in New England, grad school in the Rockies, and lived in over a dozen different cities ranging from DC to Honolulu along the way. Each and every one of these experiences has shaped who I am at this point, a fact I hope is expressed in my writing. I have developed enormous affinity for locales and people of every size and shape, and even if I never figure out a way to properly convey them on paper, I am very much grateful for their presence in my life.
To sum it up, I asked a very good friend recently how they would describe me for something like this. Their response: "Plagued by realism and trained by experiences/education to be a pessimist, you somehow remain above all else an active dreamer." While I can't say those are the exact words I would choose, I can't say they're wrong. I travel, live in different places, try new foods, meet all kinds of different people, and above all else stay curious to a fault.
Here's hoping it continues to provide us all with some pretty good stories...
I would have given four stars, but parts was so detailed and slow. Hawk, on a fishing trip, has to leave his quite cabin to travel Patagonia. Mechanical trouble forces the commercial plane to land in Venezuela. Four CIA officers and about one hundred passengers are kidnapped. U.S. again getting involved with their election. It's up to Hawk get everyone out safely. Unbelievable actions and heroism.

When one of Hawk's former client arranges a trip away, fishing by day and staying in a beautiful cabin by night. His guide cancels on him at the last minute and he asks Hawk to be his new guide. Not one to say no to a chance at some fishing or a chance at earning a large sum of money, Hawk agrees. How sorry he'll be.
When the plane Hawk and his friend are on is forced down half-way through there journey, by anti-Americans Hawk is thrown back into a life he thought he'd left long behind him.
This book was not for me, I found it too descriptive, making it very slow and at times boring. I also came across several grammatical and spelling mistakes which put me off even more. Unfortunately for these reasons I was unable to finish the book and am therefore unable to give a full review.
Thank You to the author for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Rating - One out of Five Stars Would I Read Again? - No Would I Recommend? - No Would I read other books by the same author? - Yes
One of Stevens' better works, in my opinion. Would have been a 5 Star book except Stevens overdid the ruminations of Hawk. Once or twice during the book, wondering why he was actually doing what he was doing would have been sufficient. More than that the author is just padding the word/page count.
While the book itself takes place over a couple of days, the action all takes place in one days span. Makes for a real page turner as there is no let up.
Recommended to all fellow action junkies. And, other than a couple of insignificant references to prior books in the series it can really be read as a stand alone.
Hellfire by Dustin Stevens is Action on Top of Action. Damnation!
Hawk Tate can keep, even surpass, the best of them all. How? Where? In outdoor trips into Yellowstone Park, Montana, or into the deep woods for hunting and fishing. Or, in Venezuela on an unscheduled stop encounter to Patagonia for a planned fishing trip. Then there's the deep woods survival experience that IS Hawk's daily life. But when you interrupt a very expensive and choreographed fishing expedition into Patagonia by kidnapping Hawk and over 100 fellow passengers to hold them captive over some perceived threat between wannabe Venezuelan presidential candidate's actions and the US President, well, that's just too much. Hawk's not a murderer or a soldier of fortune but he will dispense such folks if he thinks they mean to cause harm to come to him or those around him, off come the kid gloves. Tate will avoid violence if he can but he will bring everything to bear when such violence threatens his or other's lives or safety. Do NOT read this if you cannot tolerate graphic descriptions of certain acts of violence. But don't miss reading this exciting, edge-of-your-seat thriller.
This was the fourth book in this series that I have read
I am on Kindle Unlimited so I did not buy each book. I enjoyed reading all four books and intend to read rest in the series. However, the author makes the same mistake as a number of others I've read that makes me cringe and wonder why they don't do more research. For example a clip and a magazine are NOT the same, a clip is a piece of spring still used to hold rifle rounds in a straight line, inserted via the top of the open chamber, the rounds are then pushed down into the internal magazine. They are not used on pistols. In previous books the author used a pair of Walter PPK pistols with 15 round magazine's, any Bond can would know the PPK only has 6 round mags. Also, there is no 38 caliber magnum revolver, there is a 357 magnum. Minor errors but they take away from the story.
I just love the character Hawk Tate and this is the 4th book I’ve read with him as the star. Great action, solid storyline and good ending.
Why not 5 stars? Once again, the grammar/spelling errors were annoying. There weren’t a lot of them, but the ones I caught unfortunately broke the rhythm of the reading and this was frustrating. There was also a loose end regarding Salazar; his demise was implied but I didn’t feel things were really concluded.
In any event, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and can’t wait to see what’s in store for Hawk in the months to come.
I enjoyed Hellfire, the Hawk Tate #4 book in the series. This is the second one I've read and it did not disappoint. Jerimiah Tate, called Hawk, is a former DEA agent, who has given up that profession to live outside Yellowstone and lead outdoor trips as a guide. On the way to a fishing trip in Patagonia, the plane he's in lands in Venezuela and all 100+ passengers are taken captive. He escapes, meets up with a local agent, and goes back to wreak havoc and rescue the other passengers. The action is fast and pretty much non-stop. The whole story takes place n a period of less than a day, which makes for a fast story. It was a good read and I'll read more by Dustin Stevens.
The word that comes to mind as a single description of this book is IMPROBABLE!! One guy with an M 24 (for awhile) and 2 Glocks taking out 12 adversaries, all with automatic weapons, stretches believability to the breaking point. Having said that it still is a pretty good read. It would have been much better if there weren't so many typos! I find it very irritating to read a book with so many errors. I counted 15!! Don't your editors edit these books for typos? If you think they do, they're doing a poor job!
I just can’t decide which series I like best! Maybe I like them all best! Hawk is a regular guy who happens to be a Hero. He just can’t help himself. This story takes place primarily in Venezuela. Hawk does amazing things to try to save a plane full of innocent people and it turns into quite an uproar. Mr Stevens makes even the scariest of events into such an exciting story that we are much more excited than afraid. I do love this series and highly recommend it.
Hellfire is another great story by Dustin Stevens. This is another action-packed adventure that unfolds slow enough to keep you turning pages to find out what will happen next. Of course it's far fetched, but just as entertaining as all of his other books that I have had the pleasure to read. My plan is to read every book he has written!!
Dustin delivers with Hawk yet again and this time on foreign soil. It was an entertaining read start to finish. My only issue is with Mr. Stevens himself. I think he is too hung up on the verb, to demarcate and the noun, vitriol and over uses them both. That said, if that's my only issue then I don't have much of an issue at all! Can't wait for the next one!
Hawk at his best! When his flight to a fishing trip in Patagonia is forced to land in Caracas, Venazalesa due to CIA interference, he is among 100 passenger's taken hostage. Not a position Hawk is willing to submit to. How can he get away and rescue the rest of the passengers? Not easily. But you can bet he'll do his best. That's what he does. Highly recommended.
This Hawk series just seems to be getting better....
Hawk is back in West Yellowstone ready to start a new season of his guide business. He fields a call from a previous, well-funded client that wants to make a fishing trip to a foreign country. The trip begins benignly, but all hell breaks loose along the way. Another one in the series I just couldn’t put down. You should read this and more!!
These books are getting better. Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Hawk is coming into his own as main character of this series. Beginning to feel his personality which was missing in the earlier books. While it’s hard to believe that one man can accomplish so much, withstand so much pain, for the sake of what’s right, it’s certainly nice to think so. Why else read this genre. Parts of the story did drag some, skimmed those.
This writer certainly has a lot of imagination. This novel took Hawk far afield from his usual haunts. Talk about a trip gone bad! 😳 The politics and priorities are really skewed. Overall, this was a fast-paced race against time, but the least emotionally engaging book in the series. Overall, just meh.
(PLEASE, Mr. Stevens, start using more inventive language and proper grammar. “Tight” is used hundreds of times. A thesaurus would help. As would a good editor.)
Just finished the fourth in the series and look forward to more Hawk Tate books. I've read all the Reed and Billie and Zoo club series .Both are good In their own right In my opinion this series is truly the most thrilling and hardest to put down. I don't advise reading before bedtime.
Hawk is an unlikely hero as a trip to South America for fishing leads to disaster when his flight is diverted to Venezuela by the CIA . The writing is beautifully balanced to create good mental images as the action proceeds. The suspense remains high through most of the book, making it hard to put down. I plan to read more about Hawk.
The book overall is pretty good. Not DS’ best. Started off slow. Then got better ( quick reading). I think Hawk can describe his settings and thoughts in less words. I’ll keep reading your work as I am a true fan. Not every story is going to be a 4-5 Star. Keep up the good work, DS!
I really loved the pace of this adventure. A fishing trip turned Venezuela rescue mission is a nail biter. The back and forth between Washington and Venezuela; the agents on the ground and Hawk - devising his plan ~ all lead to an excited and thrilling conclusion.
I'm really growing to like the characters that Dustin Steven's writes about. I haven't read all his books yet but am looking forward to getting to know them. I have a thing about wanting to start with the 1st book in a series so I can get to know the characters from the beginning. I think you should too. Especially when the books get better and better !
First of all, where have you been most of adult life, Dustin Steven's? I started with Billie and Reese, then Ham and now Hawk!!! I am always so excited to start a new series. Keep coming back for add ons in the near future. Keep these characters alive and well, hopefully to see their HEA. Thanks for all your imagination.
Another fast paced page turner!!! I was very glad this book got back to the action packed sequences as the books I’ve read in this series. Hawk is forced into action fairly quickly & never lets up. Don’t even think twice about grabbing this book. You won’t be disappointed! I’m anxiously awaiting Hawk Tate to spin back around in my character carousel!
A fight from America has an unscheduled maintenance stop in Venezuela. All 100 passengers are deplaned and taken hostage, cell phones are not able to be used to get in touch with people back home. Immediately 4 passengers are killed, some passengers are beaten and all are scared. Is there any hope of rescue?
I really enjoyed this book, very well done and well thought out. This is the third or fourth book I have read by this writer and it may be my favorite so far. This guy tells a good story and that is really what a good writer should do. To Mr. Stevens, thanks!
It is a pleasure to read a story that holds your attention for the entire time. The plot was believable and the action was not overdone. A terrific read.
I started this one, put it down and read another book before I picked it back up. This time, I could barely put it down before I finished it. It's another excellent read in the Hawk Tate series. Plenty of action, memorable characters and one of my favorite protagonists. Bring on the next one!
Great read, as always. Mr. Stevens always has a good storyline, well thought out and timed perfectly. Believable story without all the deal other writers think you need. Keep it up!!!
As usual Dustin Stevens does not fail to entertain. I have read I believe everyone of his novels and wait with baited breath for another in any of his on going different series. I am a retired prolific reader and thoroughly enjoy his different novel story lines. Thank You and keep writing.
I having lived in Venezuela found it somewhat true to life there, other than the Bolivar international airport is miles down the side of a mountain from the city of Caracas.
Hawk is a different kind of hero. Yes he is capable but also modest and unassuming. That is a refreshing trait in a modern action/thriller hero. Hawk reminds me of SHANE. Quiet but deadly.
