Berlie Doherty née Hollingsworth is an English novelist, poet, playwright and screenwriter. She is best known for children's books, for which she has twice won the Carnegie Medal.She has also written novels for adults, plays for theatre and radio, television series and libretti for children's opera.

An emotional fairy tale which highlights a depressing life that Hansel and Gretel led with their father and evil mother. Both Hansel and Gretel were not respected or loved by their mother as she treated them horribly. Further,things took a turn for the worst as Hansel and Gretel were faced with an evil witch who attempts to "eat them for supper".
I enjoy reading this book as it is descriptive and allows children to build up their own imagination of what is happening in the story. Additionally, I think that the use of similies "they slept like angles on white clouds that night" and rhyming words makes the story exciting for the reader. Moreover, the readers can sympathise with both Hansel and Gretel throughout the story,and as with many fairy tales, it ended on a happy note! :-)
