Moonraker's bride / by Madeleine Brent -- The golden unicorn / by Phyllis A. Whitney -- Kirkland revels / by Victoria Holt -- Wings of the falcon / by Barbara Michaels -- Lady of Mallow / by Dorothy Eden -- River Rising / by Jessica North.
So... I bought this, not knowing it was a Reader's Digest edition, meaning it's heavily condensed, making each story streamlined/action heavy... which kinda defies the point of the Gothic novel's prose. While I did like most stories, I take this collection as an appetizer or a listing of more novels to add to my TBR should I like what I sampled. So, three stars feels fair.
Out of the 6 books, 2 are my all time Gothic favorites i.e. Moonraker's Bride and Kirkland Revels; 2 were good fun, and last 2 weren't bad. Good for collection!
For context, I only read the first story in this collection, Moonrakers Bride, but man, was it GOOD! I might have whiplash from all the twists and turns!
I was thrilled when I found this book at the thrift store. I hadn't read the stories before, but I wanted to.
I enjoyed some of the tales more than others. I didn't think any were outright awful though. It's a nice little collection of gothic stories, packed full of romance and women who aren't nearly as irritating as the females in the chic-lit books I've been reading lately.
It's been two years since I've read this book and I don't recall the specific stories much. I just remember really enjoying this book. I'll have to pick it up again and read all my favorites!
I read this at my grandmother's house the summer before we moved back to Germany. This was my first foray into Gothic Romance, and I LOVED it so very much. The stories captured my imagination (the Boxer Rebellion, hidden passages, moors at midnight, mysterious-brooding men, love!). I would love to go back and read all the stories again (and, if they've been condensed, read the original tales).
Comfort food for a rainy week. I got this book at a thrift store for 50 cents. It consists of 6 classic gothic stories condensed for Reader's Digest. Books/authors included: Moonraker's Bride/Brent; Golden Unicorn/Whitney; Kikland Revels/Holt; Wings of the Falcon/Michaels; Lady of Mallow/Eden and River Rising/North. I had read all of these books about 35 years ago. I would recommend reading each book in it's entirety first...but if you have many years ago, this book is a fun refresher!
This is a delightful treasury of gothic novels. I found the majority of them well-written and relatively fast-paced. They will, of course, follow a set pattern as they are part of a particularly rote style (heroine introduced, calamity, romance, climax, happily-ever-after conclusion), but that doesn't take away from the fun of reading them. I recommend picking up this tome when you want some light reading.
