Kate and her dog Duffy are the best of friends. They can weather any storm, as long as they are together. Kate can't imagine what life without Duff would be like. Until the day she's asked to consider, what if... what if she's alone? When Kate is faced with decisions, she will have to remember to consider everyone, not just herself.

A coming of age tale about a young girl whose very lifeblood seems to have entangled itself with the Scottie that captured her heart. Slowly unfolding within itself, the story holds you captive until the very end.

Read this when I was a kid. Loved it so much that I kept it. Re-reading it quickly to see if my boys would like it.

Selected for a Children's Choice Award in 1981.

Conclusion: Still a good read on the topic of knowing when it's time to let go and put an animal down :(
