Nalo Hopkinson is a Jamaican-born writer and editor who lives in Canada. Her science fiction and fantasy novels and short stories often draw on Caribbean history and language, and its traditions of oral and written storytelling.
A jazz riff on 'The Tempest,' mixed with elements of 'The Frog Prince,' which flips from one perspective to another, touching on the subjects of race and relationships.
I really enjoyed this story. I loved the shifting perspectives and the magical touch!
Nalo Hopkinson builds on William Shakespeare's The Tempest. Caliban and Ariel and siblings. Sycorax, their mother has a greater presence in this story than in Shakespeare's. The Miranda figure is key alongside Caliban and while Shakespeare's Prospero is front and center as the protagonist, Hopkinson gives a glimpse of him in an antagonistic and racist role.
I liked that the Miranda figure is not villainized in this story in order to make Caliban 'look good'.
Caliban also grows remarkably and finally shifts from 'you' to 'I'.
