I know I’m over-rating this due to childhood nostalgia. It’s a simple story, but the illustrations are cute and stirred happy memories, and while I don’t know much about the craft of writing children’s books, I thought it was well told.

Strawberry Shortcake decides to take a walk in the woods to pick wildflowers. When all her friends are too busy to join her (a device that allows the story to feature Huckleberry Pie, Raspberry Tart, and Blueberry Muffin, along with their pets), she decides to go on her own. She decides to take a nap before returning home, and when she wakes, it’s night and she gets lost. Fortunately, Lucky Bug and her friends come to the rescue, and like all Strawberry Shortcake adventures, it ends with a party with Strawberry and her friends.

Reading this, I could hear the character voices from the cartoon specials I watched as a child, though this is a wholly original story. I think I’d have enjoyed this as a child. It’s never too scary, but still has a fairytale type of conflict.

Strawberry Shortcake and the Deep Dark Woods (Updated)
Strawberry has just finished weeding and cleaning all her berry plants and sits down next to Custard. Since she’s pleased that she’s finished early she decides it will be a good idea to fill a basket with some strawberries, invite her friends to a picnic in the woods, and pick some wild flowers for her table.

She fills a basket, puts a cloth on top of it, and they head off. First, she asks Huckleberry but he says he was just about to take Pupcake down to the Strawberry Soda Stream to catch some candy trout. He tells her maybe another time. Everyone seems to be busy. Raspberry says she slept late and has to many chores. Also, Rhubarb is being naughty and has climbed up on the roof.

Blueberry says its her baking day and she has to get her goodies in the oven. Strawberry tho takes it in stride and just says they’ll just have to go by themselves. But she’ll fill her basket with wildflowers and give them to everyone as a nice surprise. They arrive in the woods. Strawberry starts to eat some of her strawberries and gives Custard some milk.

While Custard chases butterflies, Strawberry picks beautiful flowers and fills up her basket. After all her hard work, Strawberry decides to take a short nap. Then they’ll head for home. She lays on some soft moss and falls asleep. A breeze wakes her up and she sees the sun is behind the trees. A owl hoots and she decides she better head for home.

They start to walk but come to a hill that Strawberry knows they didn’t past and she realizes they must have gone in the wrong direction. As they go on it gets darker and darker. Things start to look creepy. Twisting vines look like they’re reaching out to trip them. Jagged rocks and fallen logs seem to grow. They come to a lake that’s so gigantic they can’t see across it.

Strawberry is getting scared but she decides to be brave for Custard. She says they just have to keep trying until they find a path that will lead them home. Because Custard looks tired, she picks him up and carries him. Just as she starts to think she really might be lost, Lucky Bug shows up. Lucky Bug and his friends form a ball of light and lead Strawberry to the edge of the forest. In the distance (by moonlight) she can now see her home.

At home, her friends (Huckleberry, Raspberry, and Blueberry) surprise her with candy trout, crispy tarts, and hot muffins. Pupcake, Rhubarb, and Cheesecake are also there and they rush to play with Custard. Blueberry asks Strawberry where she’s been. She says she just went to the woods to pick some flowers and she meet some new friends and some old ones. She then gives each of them a flower and eats some of the good things they brought. She finishes with some berries and a glass of milk and thinks about how good the day but the best part of all was being with her friends.

My Thoughts:
I can sympathize with Strawberry. I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to have something special you want to do, but yet you can’t find ANYBODY to go with you. At least they didn’t tell her they’d go with her and then at the last minute all be too busy or flake out. She got over it quicker than I would. Then where are the rest of them? Because there are TONS of these characters. Blueberry, Huckleberry, and Raspberry don’t even scratch the surface. So where was Lemon Méringue, Orange Blossom, Plum Pudding, Café Ole, Lem and Aida, Apricot, Peach Blush? You mean to tell me out of ALL of them these were the only 3 available? She could have even asked The Pie man, who to be a villain just seems to want to be included every now and then. Can you see the look on his face if she’d knocked on his door and asked him to come with? I guess tho I really can’t fault them *too* much because she *did* just pop up on them. People have lives and can’t always drop what they’re doing to go off and have fun in the woods. As for being lost in dark woods, sounds like something out of a nightmare. This could have easily turned into a Halloween tale if you’d thrown in some shadows, bats, and eerie noises. So I guess what we can get out of this is you never know in which form help will come to you if you need it. And sometimes the smallest things can light our paths and lead us in the right direction. And the meal at the end sound’s delicious! Do candy trout actually taste like candy? And is the stream really strawberry soda? I would LOVE that! Espeically since I love Strawberry Sunkist Soda. I'd probably be at this stream WAY too much!

Rating: 5 In a lot of ways this was very similar to Strawberry Shortcake and the Birthday Surprise. Same plot. Same ending.

I want to write a blog about this but couldn't get the scanner to work over the weekend. I'mma keep trying, but in the meantime, STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE, YOU WANDERED INTO THE WOODS BY YOURSELF AND THEN FELL ASLEEP, WHAT DID YOU THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN?
