A Bonnard head, but not in a garden; round,
simple, one ringing globe in the city
of forty times forty golden church towers.

they wear Chinese silk,
their weedy skirts are marbled
like endpapers in a rare book on birds.
They swirl because this is underwater.

I'm glad I read this book after having read her memoir The Florist's Daughter. Knowing something of her life story helped me to better understand some of her poem. It also helps that her poetry is more "transparent" than a lot of poetry I've read.
