The Naked Buddha , a timely, down-to-earth and highly accessible beginners' guide to Buddhism, struck a chord with Australian and international readers alike. In The Naked Buddha Speaks , feisty Buddhist nun Adrienne Howley continues her mission to demystify Buddhism by showing how anyone can integrate its practices into their everyday life. She also answers the questions many of her readers have raised, such
How can Buddhism make me happy? How does a Buddhist cope with grief and loss? How do I practise generosity when I'm having a bad day? How can I move away from greed and hatred? How can I change my expectations? I want to meditate, but how do I start?
In her warm and humorous style, Adrienne Howley unlocks the original basic tenets and practices of Buddhism, now the fastest-growing religion in Australia, and shows us how we can apply its principles in useful and meaningful ways to our lives.
I am an avid reader of Buddhism and there was not really anything new in this for me, except for chapter 20, it touched on the topic of Retreat.
Chapter 20. What is a Retreat and what can it do for me? A retreat is not a simply a pleasant , relaxing holiday in serene surroundings. A true retreat should be the hardest mental activity we have ever had to undertake if we are seeking to change our philosophical outlook. You know you have had a good retreat if at first you become irritated, even really angry, then decide to leave the next day, then hate all the other retreaters and the food, then almost go crazy with the sheer boredom and then, at last, see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I intend on going on a 3 day retreat sometime this year :)
