Fiksyen berbaur sejarah selalu membuat rasa jadi cair.

I'm ashamed to say that the first time I read this book, I gave it only 1 star. The reason is, I read the English translation "The Fugitive" first. Somehow in English, this story felt slow and repetitive. I was always annoyed with myself why I didn't like this early work by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. This was his early breakthrough novel which garnered a lot of attention. Why didn't I like it?

Five years later... This year, I decided to read the original Indonesian version and it is so much better. I

THERE IS A SPOILER IN MY REVIEW.

Finished the book in 5 days, its quite a short book and can probably be adapted into a play.
The story is more about trust, betrayal and friendships/relationships rather than about WW2.

Hardo character is hard to understand in both chapter 1 and 2 as he does not explain why the reasons why he does not trust his father in law or his own father.

Maybe its because the English translation which made it awkward but I felt the ending was a bit unnecessary as the author cou

Jika pada Tetralogi Pulau Buru Pram bercerita tentang masa kolonial Belanda, maka pada novel Perburuan ini ia bercerita tentang penjajahan Nippon. Tepatnya 16 Agustus 1945. Yap, 1 hari sebelum hari kemerdekaan.

It reads like a play in four Acts, over two days - the day before and the day of the Japanese surrender in WWII.
Act 1 - Hardo, an Indonesian freedom fighting hiding from the Japanese for the last 6 months returns to his village, talks to the father of his fiancee. Greed, loyalty are discussed.
Act 2 - Hardo talks to his father. Greed, loyalty are discussed.
Act 3 - Hardo talks to his fellow soldiers who have adopted the role of beggars to escape detection. Greed, loyalty and the hopes for an indep

A remarkable novel by a writer I only discovered a couple of months ago. This is the first Indonesian work of literature that I have read. I found it to be fascinating and compelling. The novel was Toer's first and is set at the end of the Japanese occupation of Indonesia. There are four long chapters that resemble acts in a play. There is a small cast of characters who interact, who ponder and present dilemmas of conscience and determination. The story is about loyalty, betrayal, redemption, li ...more

This is an early novel of Pramoedya’s written while he was imprisoned by the Dutch for his role in the Indonesian revolution that followed WWII. He has been compared to Camus and Steinbeck… an interesting combination.

The structure of the book follows a similar format of the Indonesian Wayang Kulit (shadow play). These stories are usually presented as mythical & morality tales. There is an educational moral to the plays that usually portray a battle between good and evil, with good always win

The structure of this book is so different that it bears re-reading to appreciate fully. It is slow and repetitious at the beginning, but building in complexity of thought and drama. Structurally it is almost the opposite of what we are used to in the west, and as such it is an interesting contrast of story-telling style. Most western stories try to grab your attention from the very first line. This story begins with something that is basically unrelated to the underlying drama and moves forward ...more

Apparently, this is the first of Pram's major novels. Like most of his writings, it's about Indonesia's struggle for freedom. In this book, it is a struggle against the Japanese occupation. This book was written when Pram was in jail for his rebellion against the Dutch.

It is semi-fictional. The characters and plot are made up but the time-line with the Japanese occupation is real. Tells a story about a man being hunted down as a "criminal" for leading a small rebellion militia against the Japane

(before you say anything, the book's only ~160 pages long, so yes, I read it in a few hours).

Japan's actions in SE Asia during WWII don't get a lot of play in the US, but the themes of trying to survive under oppression and being unable to trust anyone during a war are universal, and anyone whose studied any war literature will find them familiar, and the plot not entirely unpredictable.

I left with the feeling that this could actually make a great, not-too-long movie, perhaps even a great one if

Fugitive is a wonderful, short read. If you are interested in understanding more about how identity politics played a role in the Japanese occupation of Indonesia during World War II, this novel presents an engaging introduction. Existential in its treatment of the horrors of war, this fictious work (written while Toer was imprisoned) stays with you. I wonder why Toer has not won the Nobel Prize in Literature, but then I remember he's a Communist. This is too big a stance for Colonial Europe and ...more

seru,
perburuan memang selamanya memacu adrenalin, penuh ketidakpastian

Hebat!

Ran across this by accident. A very old book but still timely. While it's a specific look into rural Indonesian culture in the very last days (literally) of WWII, it is also an exploration of human feelings and motivations more generally. I don't know how well the original was written, but the translation is excellent and flows very well.

This is the first Promoedya book and I was supprized at how much I enjoyed it. I was a little worried I would not be able to connect with novels written by Indonesians and especially about the WWII time period, but the author did a nice job of making it easy to follow. I do think a little more character development would have been nice - you're left wordering about each person.

Toer wrote this while imprisoned by the Dutch for his revoluntionary roles. It's a short character sketch of various personalities and their responses in times of trouble. The whole book takes place in 1 day, the eve of the defeat of the Japanese before the Allied Forces won. Toer's message seems to be that people never change.

Sebuah cerita pendek tentang kemerdekaan. Bahwa kemerdekaan adalah sebuah perjuangan yang diperebutkan. Cukup pendek tetapi mampu membuat kita memahami pemikiran dan perjuangan para perebut kemerdekaan.

It's another heart beating adventure by Pramoedya. I spent too much time to finish this thin book compare to his other books. But the ending turn to be more interesting than I thought before ... and again ... with sad ending. Fortunately, I can save my cry till the ending.

Pramoedya Ananta Toer was an Indonesian author of novels, short stories, essays, polemics, and histories of his homeland and its people. A well-regarded writer in the West, Pramoedya's outspoken and often politically charged writings faced censorship in his native land during the pre-reformation era.
