I was pleasantly surprised by this product. I remember seeing the commercials on tv and it seemed gimmicky, but I decided to give it a try. When I opened the box, I was worried it might be too boring for him. You get DVDs, a workbook, some readers and some flash cards. How wrong I was! My three year old son LOVES Hooked on Phonics. We went through levels 1 and 2 very quickly as he wanted to do it all the time. I have even heard him say "If I'm good, can we do phonics today?" We just got levels 3 and 4 in the mail and I am excited to work through those with him.

Levels 1 and 2 go through letter recognition, letter sounds and rhyming words. Most of it was review for my son, but I felt like it really solidified his understanding. He especially liked the DVDs and flash cards. I was able to challenge him by asking him to make games for me using the flash cards. My son has a very traditional learning style, but the workbook gives options for hands-on learning.

We also tried "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" but that didn't go well at all. It was too boring/ repetitive and he hated it, so we quit after lesson 6.

Highly recommend Hooked on Phonics and I suggest starting it at 3 years old.
