I picked this book up over the weekend at the flea market used book shop. For a quarter. Not a bad price for a pure nostalgia trip.

To understand what this book meant, you have to go back to the time period that birthed it, a "more civilized age," as Old Ben would have called it. Star Wars absolutely ruled the world in the minds of young single-digit-years-old lads such as I was at the time, you devoured anything and everything that had that familiar logo on it---and believe it or not, there wasn't a whole hell of a lot of media outside the films themselves (of which there were only two at the time of this book's publication. With a third, inaccurate in hindsight yet historically accurate at the time called "Revenge of the Jedi" in the pages of this very book.)

Now... this book. It held a two-fold novelty: one, it was another piece of Star Wars merch which was good enough for me at the time. Two, it held some mythic quality to it. A kid wrote it. A kid was allowed to be a published expert and benchmark of authority on all matters Star Wars! If he could be an expert, so could I! It was an inspiration to any kids who'd rather spend their time daydreaming about galaxies far, far away than be outside touching grass. This curated book of trivia was as close as you were going to get to a proper Star Wars encyclopedia back then. And I devoured every single word of it.

Because when you're in elementary school in the early 80s, nothing said cool like knowing the serial number of the garbage compactor on the Death Star detention level.

It's not the early 80s anymore, and I'm not a wide-eyed child anymore. Flipping its pages today, I can appreciate it for the window back to the good ol' days, but adult me doesn't quite place the same importance on meaningless Star Wars minutiae that my younger self would have. My younger self would no doubt be very disappointed. To him I say this to reassure him his efforts were not wasted: the garbage compactor number was 3263827. Yes, I still remember it.

I recommend this book only if you meet the same criteria I brought to it: you remember it fondly from back in the day, and you can acquire this little nostalgic detour at minimal cost. Don't have expectations that are very high.

Way back before anyone really realized Star Wars was going to last as a kick-ass multi-billion dollar global conglomerate, Lucas allowed little Rusty Miller, age 13 or 14ish, to put out this Star Wars trivia book. I remember my mom buying it for me from Waldenbooks in the mall and pouring over its contents at home for a few days. This was about the same time one of our kittens peed inside my Star Wars figure case, thinking it was some sort of tricked-out imperial litter box. I learned to keep those things closed after that, but never completely got rid of the smell.
I miss you 80s and your simple problems. Sigh.

My rating is completely nostalgia based but darn it I love this book. I bought it hot off the presses in 1982 and read it countless times. Before the days of Wikipedia and the Internet, this little book held almost all the public knew about Star Wars.
