Oh, my, gosh. I picked this book up from a sutler's sale table at a re-enactment in Pilot Knob, Missouri. For $3. It is a jewel, as it appeals to the quilter and the historian in my soul.
Lipsett tells the story of a family and a quilt, through use of letters, research, interviews, and plain old doggedly hard work. The quilt in the title is a friendship quilt (signed by lady relatives and friends) given to Ellen when she marries and moves to the wilds of the midwest.
A combination of genealogy and quilting, this story of a signature quilt and family letters tells the story of the woman who received the quilt in the mid-1800's as a wedding gift from her sister.
The story behind this book was interesting, however, the writing was poor. The letters themselves are to have issues, that is expected, but the interspersed writing of the actual book author left much to be desired.
