Troyat was a French author, biographer, historian and novelist.

Troyat was born Levon Aslan Torossian in Moscow to parents of Armenian descent. His family fled Russia in anticipation of the revolution. After a long exodus taking them to the Caucasus on to Crimea and later by sea to Constantinople and then Venice, the family finally settled in Paris in 1920, where young Troyat was schooled and later earned a law degree. The stirring and tragic events of this flight across half of Europe are vividly recounted by Troyat in 'Tant que la terre durera'.

Troyat received his first literary award, Le prix du roman populaire, at the age of twenty-four, and by twenty-seven, he was awarded the Prix Goncourt.

Troyat published more than 100 books, novels and biographies, among them those of Anton Chekhov, Catherine the Great, Rasputin, Ivan the Terrible and Leo Tolstoy.

Troyat's best-known work is La neige en deuil, which was adapted as an English-language film in 1956 under the title The Mountain.

He was elected as a member of the Académie française in 1959. At the time of his death, Troyat was the longest serving member of the Academy.

It is a psichological novel about the life and struggle of a single father and his teenage son (the narrator) in Paris in 1920-s. The son's feels he is forced to costantly ride an emotional roller-coaster and his attidude towards his weak-willed, infantile, selfish parent constantly changes. It is the father who is unable to take resonsibility for anybody or anything in his life and drags the two of them into the abyss. Unfortunately, the father is all the boy has in life.

Αντίστροφη ρόλων: ο μπαμπάς που είναι παιδί (αλλά δεν είναι) και το παιδί που μοιάζει με μπαμπά (αλλά δεν είναι). Γαλλία δεκαετία '20. Ο νεαρός Ζαν έχει χάσει από οκτώ χρονών την μητέρα του και σύντομα και ο πατέρας του φεύγει μετανάστης στην Αμερική. Μένει με μια θεία του (κουνιάδα του πατέρα του) και περνάει βαρετά. Όλη η ζωή του είναι σχολείο-σπίτι-διάβασμα-φαγητό. Επιθυμεί όσο τίποτ' άλλο την επιστροφή του πατέρα του. Αναπολεί την οικογενειακή ζωή, όπως ιδεατά την είχε πιάσει στην φαντασία του (το βιβλίο ανοίγει με μια χριστουγεννιάτικη ανάμνησή του πριν τον θάνατο της μάνας).

Και ο πατέρας επιστρέφει μετά από πέντε χρόνια. Φουριόζος συγκρούεται με τη θεία και παίρνει τον έφηβο πια Ζαν να ζήσουν οι δυό τους. Κι εκεί ο Ζαν ανακαλύπτει μια φοβερή πραγματικότητα: ο μπαμπάς του είναι ένας κοινός κομπιναδόρος -κι όχι επιχειρηματίας που του παρουσιάζεται, κατά συρροήν ψεύτης, άφραγκος -κι όχι ευκατάστατος που αφήνει να εννοηθεί. Στο ζόρι του να χτίσει μια ζωή δεν διαστάζει να εκμεταλλευτεί την αγάπη γυναικών και να τις παραμυθιάσει κι όλα αυτά μπροστά στα μάτια του γιου του, ο οποίος δεν λέει τίποτα.

Σύντομα έρχονται τα μπλεξίματα με τους πιστωτές και η κατάσταση γίνεται απελπιστική και για τους δύο. Ο μικρός Ζαν στην αρχή τον μίσησε που του κατέστρεψε το πρότυπο, στη συνέχεια όμως τον λυπάται. Και είναι αυτός που του συμπαρίσταται σιωπηλά στο δράμα του, δηλαδή την πορεία προς την καταστροφή.

Είναι ενδιαφέρον και ευκολοδιάβαστο το βιβλίο του Τρουαγιά, το πρώτο του κιόλας ,αλλά με πολύ γκροτέσκες καταστάσεις, αντιρρεαλιστικές σχεδόν, και κακό πλασάρισμα τέλους. Πολύ ωραία η ελληνική έκδοση. Εξηκονταετίας και βάλε.

Only one review of this on GR! I picked it up having finished Un Si Long Chemin; it's his first published novel, which promptly won a prize and allowed him to contemplate a career as a novelist. It was on my shelf, so I must have read it at some point, but to be honest I didn't remember it. Most of the novel plays on humour; young Jean's father Guillaume is an an incorrigible narcissist and fantasist (based on an uncle of Troyat). He constantly dreams up fantastic money-making schemes which come to nothing, casts off one inappropriate girlfriend after another, falls further and further into debt, dodges creditors with the help of equally impecunious friends. It is funny, but draws the reader skilfully into pathos within the last 10 pages. In this short piece Troyat already shows his talent for the character-based novels that were going to make him so popular.

Un merveilleux roman démontrant que nos choix sont souvent limités, sans notre connaissance, par les circonstances qu'on croit inexistantes, et que nos caractères sont formés et déformés à raison de peu de confort et de rectitude familiale présente tout au long des 30 premières années de nos vies. Le père est le fils, ainsi que la tante ou la "belle-sœur" , sont vraisemblablement écrit de nature - d'une histoire vraie des nobles Russes "déclassées" après leur départ précipités et l'éclatement des familles qui a suivi la révolution de 1917 - ce qui était acceptable et pouvait nourrir une famille dans une société exclusive et riche, ne l'était plus dans une société plus ouverte et moins raffinée...

Απλό, άμεσο, κατανοητό ένα μυθιστόρημα που δεν απέχει από την σημερινή πραγματικότητα. Μια ιστορία που περιγράφει την προσπάθεια του ανθρώπου για δημιουργία για επικοινωνία για επαφή. Οι προσπάθειες για ζωή, που όμως στο τέλος επέρχεται ο θάνατος. Ενα βιβλίο μια ιστορία πραγματική, αληθινή αυτό της δίνει την μαγιά της ομορφιάς. Διάβασα σήμερα αυτό το βιβλίο ως ανάμνηση της εκδρομής της Γ3 γυμνασίου στην Καβάλα, με τις τότε καθηγήτριες κ.Χριστοδουλου φιλόλογο, και την κ.Κατσιλιερη φυσικό απ' ότι θυμάμαι.... το βιβλίο αυτό ήταν δώρο εταιρίας ταξιδιών ....αν και αμυδρά θυμάμαι κάποιες εικόνες από αυτήν την εκδρομή....

emprunté dans une boîte à livres près de chez moi, je ne savais à quoi m'attendre car il n'y avait aucun résumé sur le dos de ce livre ; ce fût une très belle surprise ! j'ai adoré la plume de l'auteur, et j'ai adoré détester le personnage du père. Ça se lit très facilement et rapidement, et pour ma part j'ai été happé par le récit de cette tranche de vie d'un père et son fils, pleine de rebondissements, d'espoirs et de désespoirs.
