A collection of brief biographies on notable women throughout history in New York State. Includes biographies on Deborah Dunch Moody, Kateri Tekakwitha, Emma Hart Willard, Amelia Jenks Bloomer, Sybil Luddington, Harriet Tubman, Katherine Bement Davis, Mary Burnett Talbert, Emily Warren Roebling, Sara Josephine Baker, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and Dorothy Day. Native Americans, African Americans, rich or poor - all these women contributed to society in important ways.

This is part of a larger series...one for each state, I believe. Each entry is about 10-12 pages long, so it's a brief overview of each life.

I especially liked reading about NYS women. I had known something about each except for Deborah Dunch Moody (the first woman to receive a land grant in the American colonies and a religious refugee) and Sybil Ludington (the brave young "female Paul Revere").

I'd recommend this book for anyone seeking more about the contribution of women in our American Histo

This well written book, featuring 12 women, is interesting and has associated photos and illustrations. It has a strange array of women from very well known ones like Harriet Tubman to more obscure. Antonia Petrash's choice and abundant praise for two Catholic women known for their religious piety seemed particularly bias as no other religions were similarly featured and certainly Mother Ann Lee and others could have been.

Oh, my--I didn't realize this was a series. Well, I have my work cut out for me now. It's worth the price for the photos alone. It contains a wonderful mix of scientists, arts patrons, and champions of worthwhile causes. Although I was surprised Susan B. Anthony was not in the mix, I was happy to see Amelia Bloomer, Emma Willard and Harriet Tubman. I salute the research behind the good writing that makes this a valuable book.
