The story revolves around a prince and his love for a neighboring princess. They marry, but the prince's spiritual quest parallels the life of Buddha. Author Rgyal lived from 1697 to 1763 and held many important government posts in Tibet, including that of prime minister. Rgyal's novel is an exquisite work of world literature.

O father, ministers, and people, things appear
Pleasant, but they are sweet only in name.
Really they are like a poisonous flower:
You crave its abundant beauty, but eventually
It kills you, causing much suffering to arise.

Because you are attached to things like this,
You are confused about how to free yourselves.
Worldly things vanish like ripples on water.
Why tire and exhaust yourselves for them?

A wonderful story written in 1700s Tibet by Tshe Ring Dbang Rgyal, a wily politician (is that the right word?). It's a love story but more than that it's a story that teaches people to live a good Buddist life. It reads like a fairytale.

I'm curious about the translation...sometimes the word choice by the translator stood out. Good choice or poor choice?
