A revised and updated version of the definitive peanut allergy book. Since the publication of The Peanut Allergy Answer Book in May 2001, there has been much additional research published in the field of peanut allergy and anaphylaxis in medical literature. This research includes new diagnostic tests, new vaccines and therapies, and new information on the history of peanut allergy. In addition, there has also been a great increase in public awareness of the societal impact of peanut allergy, such as in schools and other child-care facilities, in restaurants, and in the food and restaurant industry. This attention has led to the publication of guidelines for schools in the management of food allergies and anaphylaxis, to legislation such as the Food Allergen Labeling Consumer Protection Act of 2006, and proposed legislation for restaurant guidelines for food-allergic consumers. The incidence of peanut allergy has doubled in the past five years and continues to increase so the impact of this medical problem, particularly in young children, is enormous. The Peanut Allergy Answer Book, 2nd Edition, . contains 50% of new and revised material, including a new foreword and introduction, as well as new chapters such as, "Why has peanut allergy increased so much in the past 5-10 years?"; "What is the difference between being peanut-sensitive and peanut-allergic?"; "What is the Hygiene Hypothesis?"; and "Can skin contact cause an anaphylactic reaction?"
I do not have a peanut allergy, nor do I associate on a regular basis to anyone who does, although I do have a friend that suffers from this allergy. However, when I entered this giveaway, I entered with the idea that I would learn about something new if I won.
Technically there are eight chapters, but each chapter would be better characterized as a category in which there are several sub-categories. It is formatted as a series of FAQ about the many different facets of peanut allergy diagnosis and treatment, including how to best prevent coming into contact with peanut proteins, the risk involved if you do have an allergic reaction, the latest studies and experiments regarding this type of allergy, and even a short section on cross-reactivity with other nuts and allergens.
Michael C. Young presents a lot of study results and statistical data that is a bit mind-numbing to get through at times, although I don't think it would be as overwhelming if you read it the way it was intended to be read—as a list of FAQ—instead of reading it from start to finish like I did. I would imagine that there isn't a lot of information out there that is this well put-together regarding peanut allergies, and I would definitely think that this book, in conjunction with a doctor's advice, would be an excellent resource for anyone who has been diagnosed with a peanut allergy or is the parent of a child with one.

This book is incredibly useful to anyone facing a peanut allergy. There is a great deal of misinformation out there, and many people do not take the allergy seriously enough. Allergists must walk a fine line in making patients understand the seriousness of the allergy while not completely freaking them out, and this book lays the facts out there in such a way as to make living with a peanut allergy seem possible without changing one's lifestyle completely. I highly recommend this book.
My son just had a reaction to peanuts. I never thought it would be my son as there are no food allergies between me and my husband. This book was so helpful in explaining what the allergy is and how to handle it. I am sure I will continue to use it as a resource over the next years.
This is a really great book if you want to learn about peanut allergies, but I must say, I also hated it. We are very lucky that so far Nathan's nut allergy hasn't been so severe as to need his Epi-pen, but I hate that we need this book at all.
This book reminds me why I rarely read science books. It was the newest one I could find on the subject but it is already way out of date in some areas. Helped me some but not enough.
