Please bear with me - I haven't read this book since 1989!

This is a novel ideal for readers making the transition from 'picture books' to 'chapter books' (in fact it was my very first chapter book). The heroine, a young girl, runs away and finds herself hiding in an old windmill. It turns out this windmill can talk, and it helps her through various adventures as their friendship grows. A very exciting story with a very satisfactory (and to my seven year old mind, entirely plausible) conclusion.
