This novel really hit its stride once the protagonist makes it to the front. Not being interested in military matters, I found the parts without combat descriptions far more easy to get through. Very good research, especially with Tom's wounds. I understand that Mackay based the story on the experiences his father recounted. We'll be meeting the author in a couple of days and I will see about updating this review with any new information.

Update: I couldn't believe how much of this book was true,

This historical novel by Robert Mackay is very well written and well researched, and tells the story of a World War I soldier in the cavalry. It was a horrible war, and some of the book is difficult to read because it depicts the suffering men and horses had to endure, but I came away from it with a greater understanding of the sacrifices our grandfathers and great grandfathers made during those years.

The story is built around the relationship between a reluctant young soldier and his girl at

A wonderful historical novel that brings World War I to life, including the battlefields. The plot places realistic characters in amazing situations, and the setting is rich with detail that makes the story feel very authentic.

Wow what an amazing story of how this man could turn out to be a memorable hero.

In the year 1914 as the dreadful first war had started, Tom Macrae, a polite young man, trained to be a lawyer. He didnt know the one who was training him was actually a thief and a bad man just as the many he defended in court. One night Tom heard a noise. He stepped outside with a .22 and was fortunately just grazed by a police officers bullet.

The few next days, Tom was brought to court and was thought to help an

This is a wonderful story about WW1 and the Canadian cavalry from the point of view of a young soldier. It is well written in an easy to read format with very real characters. It does not glorify war but rather portrays the feelings of the young men who fought, their relationships with each other and their horses. The descriptions of the battles are vivid but not overly graphic. Woven through is a love story that may or may not stand the test of time. I recommend this book whether you are a ...more

A Canadian author writes a compelling story about a Canadian soldier in one of the last cavalry charges of WWI. Good research and characterization in this very readable novel that helped me understand this aspect of warfare and relate to Tom, the protagonist. It's gritty and violent, but so human, and with good tension and pacing.
This novel won the IPPY gold medal.
Highly recommended for those who read historical military fiction.

Historical facts from WW1 as recounted from diaries, this novel has a ring of truth from a young recruit who was there. Well researched, would recommend for anyone interested in topics of foot soldiers, horses in battle from personal accounts.
