I'm all for diversity in children's novels but I feel like when they name a bunch of brightly colored humanoid creatures (each with their own unique skills, of course) "Pablo", "Austin", "Tyrone", "Tasha", and "Uniqua" that they're just trying too hard.
Couple that with awkward, stilted storytelling and some rather strange color choices and it's not great all around.
Although my daughter absolutely LOVES these backyard friends and all of their adventures...she loses interest in this very quickly. I personally can not blame her, for I too am unable to see anything intriguing about this little book. I would not recommend it based on my own experience, but hey...every child is different...and that is why there are soooooo many books available to suit different interests.
It's the Backyardigans! (yes, I am a grown-up, and yes I am a fan. :P ) I don't mind multiple re-read requests from Mini-Me on this one. At least so far...
All the words that are colors are bolded in that color. This is very helpful! Not only is it just learning colors but is an exciting adventure to go on along the way.
