The stories are tragic but brief and the conclusion seems to hit you before the book really gets started. The illustrations are well done however. There's not much else to this except to watch the documentary The Lost Boys of Sudan or God Grew Tired of Us.
Four young men who survived harrowing experiences during the war in south Sudan and eventually made it to Dallas tell their stories. The book is mostly in cartoon form, but all in black and white, underlining the horror of their stories. The stories are gripping and are simply told. Despite all that these boys endured, they survived partly because they were able to find strength from within and keep on hoping when their circumstances seemed overwhelming and impossible to escape.
