I've lived in the Bay Area my entire life and spent quite some time in San Francisco and had yet to ever hear about Emperor Norton I. I honestly can't remember how he recently came up, either, but it was in conversation with someone, casually, and then I happened upon this book at my library and... here we are!

This book is primarily built from letters, articles, and eyewitness accounts and that is Drury's strength; his research. It's meticulous, and has to be, because what the reader gets is not
