An excellent history of all of the actors--Japanese, French, American, North & South Vietnamese, Vietcong, Chinese, and Soviets--that affected the evolution of one of the Cold War's and post-colonialism's most intense areas of competition.

This is an excellent book - it tells the story of the Vietnamese struggle for independence from the perspective of the Vietnamese.

William J. Duiker is a former United States Foreign Service officer and Professor of History at Penn State University.
