It's definitely a practical guide. It's a good primer to UNIX shells and shell scripting as well as a pretty good reference - not too basic on the details, yet not too overloaded with stuff for the power user.

A good primer for all the UNIX basics. I have
the first edition, I'd suggest the a more recent
edition. A good reference to go back and look over
things once in a while.

My go to Unix books for years (actually, approaching decades now.) It's the only physical technical book that I still reference frequently.
