Rate this book
Enjoyment and adventure in the outdoors are within reach of nearly every American. Two of the most popular and pleasant activities that occur under open skies are camping and cooking. Whether it be on the patio, in the backyard, in the park, or in distant places of beauty and solitude - the outdoors enhances the fun of sleeping, cooking, and eating. In this book Dian Thomas has helped make outdoor learning and living quality experiences and has contributed greatly to an important but often overlooked aspect of outdoor education.

A few of the tips in this book will uh not go over well for your overall health.

Asbestos gloves and using an old bleach bottle as a scoop are uh not advisable.

That being said there are a few cool recipes and advice for campers.

I read this book when it first came out. It was innovative at that time, naturally it is outdated today. Some recipes seemed a bit gimmicky (bacon and eggs in a paper bag) but the pineapple upside down cake in a Dutch oven worked great and I amazed and delighted my young charges at a children’s home when I prepared it on a backpacking trip. Yes, I packed the Dutch oven just so I could make this. Memorable book and enjoyable read.

This little book is packed with ideas for camping and cooking outdoors. While some of the suggestions are a bit dated (some things I remember doing with my girl scout troop 30 years ago), there are many things in this book that “stand the test of time.” There are lots of outdoor cooking concepts explained (many with illustrations/diagrams) and recipes included so you can try them out.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for some creative ideas for outdoor cooking.

A bit outdated (it didn't mention mummy bags, for instance), but it had lots of ideas. Most of them seemed like a lot of work to me, but some of them I liked and I'm sure other people would like others of the ideas. Only a few recipes, but lots of cooking/baking ideas & techniques. It has other camping tips, too, but my favorites were mostly the cooking ones.

Can't believe that I remembered this title either! I used to really make fun of this book as a kid. She had some crazy ideas. Don't know if I would think that they were so crazy now.

Read/skimmed this book to get some ideas for our camping trip. As the title says, it is 'a unique ideabook'. The ideas I found most helpful were the ways to cook outside.
