Lulu and the Dog from the Sea is Hilary McKay’s second adventure about a young animal lover whose compassion for animals in need often leads her into trouble. Set during the summer, this story takes place at the beach, where Lulu and her family take a vacation with Lulu’s best friend Mellie. On their first day in their vacation home, Lulu is warned not to befriend a stray dog who wreaks havoc on the neighborhood by digging through everyone’s

I'm reading this series via Skype and my kindle app on my laptop to my grandsons ages 5 and 8, on the other side of the U.S. from me, and they both love it. It is hard to find a series that can attract both of the boys' attention, but this series is great. We both especially loved this book.

It's a great story of parents being upbeat and positive and making the best of the situation, and the rewards of patient and careful with new animals. The girls also learn not to wander off by themselves but

A sweet story about a girl who loves animals, a dog who fears humans, and a not-so-perfect family vacation. This was a fun read-aloud with my daughter. It generated some good discussion about why people in the town might not like a stray dog.

Finally a pleasant and mild chapter book to read to the kids. No offensive language at all, no bad attitudes (except the dad complained too much in one part), nothing I have to gloss over or skip, and my kids enjoyed it.

I enjoyed Lulu and the Dog from the Sea on Kindle Unlimited. This second in the series book is on the new read-aloud list for Sonlight Curriculum's new Kindergarten for 2020. 📚💗 Definitely one of the books I look forward to reading again with my son this year and I hope to own soon. Lulu and the Dog from the Sea is the second in the series but I jumped right in and read it without reading the first and enjoyed it well. Lulu may be another series to look into reading more from in the future. Crea ...more

Lulu and her cousin Mellie are back in another adventure involving new animals. This time, Lulu's parents are taking the girls to the beach. Upon arrival to their somewhat less-fancy-than-expected beach house, Lulu and her family are warned by the cottage owner that there is a stray dog in the area who's been a menace. They even have to take the stinky outdoor trash can in at night (Lulu's parents test this suggestion only to have to pick up trash the next morni

This is the second book in a series for young children who love animals. This charming stories is about a young girl named Lulu and her cousin Mellie in their beach adventure. Lulu and her family are on vacation to a less than nice beach cottage. This same beach is where people say their is a rowdy stray dog that is only up to trouble. Lulu is an enormous animal lover, and her young curious mind tells her to befriend the dog and help people see the sad and lonely dog that Lulu sees inside. As th ...more
Lulu and Mellie are fun to be with. Lulu adores animals, and by the end of the first chapter, you can predict where this is going. The wholesomeness of it is refreshing, and I liked how Lulu and Mellie asked the townspeople about the dog to learn more. Great initiative. What I didn't like, though, is Lulu climbing out the window at night. She and Mellie are seven! I also thought the cottage owner's character was a little overdone for the minimal role that she played in the story.

I think that this book should be rated a three of five stars because this is a book that a fifth or a lower level sixth grader might read. However this book is adventurous, detailed, and well thought out. I would recommend this book if you had a little sister like I do. She enjoyed the book Lulu and The Dog From the Sea because it reminds her of our dog and enjoyable moments that we have had at the beach.

Charming animal-lover Lulu is back with another adventure. This time, Lulu, her parents, her best friend Mellie and her dog Sam are off to the seaside for some rest and relaxation. Unfortunately, their destination isn't quite what they'd hoped for. The cabin's not up to snuff, Mellie's kite-making kit is a disaster and there's a wild, garbage rooting, food stealing dog on the loose. Of course, to canine friend Lulu, this dog could only be good news, as long as she can tame him.

Lulu and her family go to the beach for their vacation. The cottage is not the most comfortable place to stay. More potholes than road make up the driveway making it an adventure every time they need to go to town for something. Lulu's dad is "training" for a marathon and her mom just wants to read. Mellie, Lulu's cousin and best friend just wants to build a kite which is more difficult than expected. And Lulu...she only wants to befriend the dog from the sea. This is a great book for 3rd-5th grade. It has characters that are likable and offers action, heart, friendship and a scruffy dog. (Who doesn't love a scruffy dog?) Lulu, her best friend Mellie (who is also Lulu's cousin)and Lulu's parents set out on a vacation at the beach. They arrive at a cottage they have rented and the cottage owner greets them. She informs them of a stray dog that is very bothersome that will steal your food at night and get into the trash creating a huge mess. Shortly aft ...more

This is such a sweet, cute, and well-written book for animal loving kids! Lulu and Mellie are the best of friends and they're prepping for a beach vacation. Their personalities are very different, but they work well together. When they arrive at the cottage, the owner is really upset about a stray dog that's hanging around. Immediately, Lulu hatches a plan to tame the pup and convince her parents to take him home. This book has a happy ending, but Lulu and Mellie manage to create some trouble be ...more

Oh, these Lulu books are so clever and cute! I feel like maybe I should be giving them five stars. If there were 1/2 stars, they would be 4 1/2. Lulu and Mellie and the gang are heading to the sea for the holiday and bring Sam, the dog, along with. The way Hilary McKay captures the way the parents are eying Sam on the car ride anticipating any possible motion sickness had me in stitches. It is so perfectly awful and hilarious at the same time. I love Lulu and her family, just as I do all of Hilary McKay's characters and families. Lynn and I blogged about the first book in this series at Bookends: and I was delighted to get the sequel at ALA's Midwinter Meetings. This is a series I will follow even though it is too young for my middle schoolers and my own grown children.

This installment features a vacation at a cottage at the sea and an encounter with an unappreciated local stray dog. Add in the

Lulu and Mellie aren't just friends, they are best friends. Lulu's love for her menagerie of just about a dozen pets is once again very evident in this story about her family's trip to the ocean. This book isn't just sweet, it's super sweet! Lulu is just as cute and funny as ever in this latest offering in the Lulu series. This is a really sweet story about a girl that believes she can make a difference in a dog's life. Her family is beautiful. They provided an interesting dynamic and quite a bit of humor throughout the story.

The writing is simple, just right for children making their way into chapter books. There are quite a few illustrations in the book, but not on every page. The artwork is cute and fits the mood of the story really well. For an early chapter book, I was really impressed.

Lulu and the Dog from the Sea is a children's book by Hilary McKay. My daughter and I read this together and we were rooting for the Dog from the Sea from the moment we learned his story. The Dog from the Sea was scared, hungry, thirsty and misunderstood. He did everything he could to stay alive and away from the dog catchers. As a result, people hated him and feared him - until Lulu, her friend, and her family came along.

This is a story of friendship, unconditional love, trust and hope. I defi

The Lulu series is for all the children who have a love for animals. While most children's series you can pick up any book and read them out of order this one I would recommend reading in order. You do not have to, but it makes a little bit more sense in order. This is aobut a trip that Lulu takes with her faimly and they meet a dog that has been running wild by the sea. Lulu's goal is to rescue the dog by the end of the family trip and maybe make him her own. The Lulu books are wonderful becaus ...more

This is my very, very favorite Lulu book so far, which is saying a LOT. As usual with this series, it's absolutely hilarious, with lots of jokes for both kids and adults...and the ending actually made me tear up. (I'm not sure if I love it even more than LULU AND THE CAT IN THE BAG because it's better, or just because I'm a dog person rather than a cat person. But they're both fabulous books!)

The prequel story, “Lulu and the Dog from the Sea,” (2011) is every bit as good as "Lulu and the Duck in the Park." Lulu and Mellie are on holiday at the seaside with Lulu’s family. The dog catchers are after this menacing, thieving, mangy escape artist (dog). Hilary McKay takes us on a heartwarming hilarious ride to its guessable and satisfying conclusion.
