Rate this book
Paula Luna is a typical single parent trying to earn an honest living in San Uvalde. Alluring and edgy, she works her way through her workday amid a sea of incompetent coworkers and lascivious men. But Paula has an alter ego. As an asset of a secret U.S. agency, Paula dons her uniform, knives, and a state of the art goggles that assists with her missions (and social networking) and becomes La Lechusa, a master assassin named after a creature of Mexican folklore. When one of her jobs leads to a power play for security contracts among competing corporations at Rexault Pharmaceuticals, La Lechusa is forced to take sides by her shadowy handlers. All the while, Paula has to deal with a mysterious power in two sacred necklaces bestowed by an eccentric neighbor for Paula and her daughter. The necklaces promise protection from impending doom by an “angel negra”, black angel. Can Paula Luna maintain a normal life raising a daughter, looking for love, and partying with friends? Will the mystical force help or hinder her clandestine endeavors? Or will the blood on the blades of La Lechusa spell the end for Paula and her family?

"Code Name: La LeChusa" is an action novel with one hell of punch. From the first page's intense opening scene, throughout the novel, to the end, we are treated to an energetic page turner. The entire book has an amazing momentum which carries it forward rapidly due primarily to the charismatic protagonist, Paula Luna.

Bowie V. Ibarra writes this novel from the point of view of a woman who is not only a loving mother but also a cold blooded assassin. He does this incredibly well and creates a balance Paula Luna has between her family and her "work". The love and nuances between Paula and her daughter feels so genuine in the writing you often forget that this is from the pen of a man. Indeed, all of the the subtle things that make Paula the sexy, woman with style were never over looked throughout the book.

The fight sequences are beyond doubt Bowie's forte. The moment Paula acts undercover as La LeChusa and does what she does best, the reader will be hooked. Paula has a lethal Bowie knife with her always that never fails and when it is used you can be sure the results are bloody. For those who have liked Bowie's previous novels here is where you will see some of his handiwork.

There is also one other weapon, a secret weapon that is a supernatural power standing by Paula's side. The angel Michaela who speaks to Paula, and the old crone, Irma Celestina, who aids Paula as the real La LeChusa. This mythical folklore which Bowie intertwines into the story works perfectly as a backdrop for the San Uvalde Estates, and the myth of La LeChusa that Paula Luna, herself, has become.

This is an excellent novel for action and intrigue. I highly recommend it if you are looking for something other than your typical spy novel. The plot is creative and new, you will not be disappointed!
