I grew up outside of Galveston and my Dad spent his early professional life working in the city. Having heard numerous accounts of the 1900 storm, this book drew my attention.

The black and white photographs provide a stark reminder of the power of mother nature. Although the figure of 6000 is offered as the number of people who died in the storm, that figure is only an estimate. The photographs are amazing, especially since there are ones I have never seen before (after reading Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson and Storm of the Century by Al Roker). The writing...it's very detailed and sometimes reads like a list. I like that Bixel focused on the rebuilding of the city and organization of people/leaders instead of the horror of the storm. But it gets a little monotonous at times. I had to force myself to continue.

I see it as more of a reference book, especially for the photo
