An inspirational story of Alexander The Great as his last words:

There is very instructive incident involving the life of Alexander, the great Macedonian king. Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed. With death staring him in his face, Alexander realized how his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence.

He now longed to reach home to see his mother’s face and bid her his last adieu. But, he had to accept the fact that his sinking health would not permit him to reach his distant homeland. So, the mighty conqueror lay prostrate and pale, helplessly waiting to breathe his last. He called his generals and said, “I will depart from this world soon, I have three wishes, please carry them out without fail.” With tears flowing down their cheeks, the generals agreed to abide by their king’s last wishes.

“My first desire is that,” said Alexander, “My physicians alone must carry my coffin.” After a pause, he continued, “Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be strewn with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected in my treasury.

“The king felt exhausted after saying this. He took a minute’s rest and continued. “My third and last wish is that both my hands be kept dangling out of my coffin.”The people who had gathered there wondered at the king’s strange wishes. But no one dare bring the question to their lips.

Alexander’s favorite general kissed his hand and pressed them to his heart. “O king, we assure you that your wishes will all be fulfilled. But tell us why do you make such strange wishes?”

At this Alexander took a deep breath and said: “I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learnt. I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure any body. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let not people take life for granted.

The second wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell People that not even a fraction of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is a sheer waste of time to chase wealth.

And about my third wish of having my hands dangling out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came empty handed into this world and empty handed I go out of this world.”

Alexander’s last words: “Bury my body, do not build any monument, keep my hands outside so that the world knows the person who won the world had nothing in his hands when dying“.

With these words, the king closed his eyes. Soon he let death conquer him and breathed his last.

What a history? Love the book entirely, the story telling my R.Muthukumar is astounding you will not feel as if you are reading a cumbersome history. This book is a wonderful read.

It was a nice read, the author could have done better. It appears broken and loss of continuity at places but overall it was good to read about a great king who ruled the earth!

மாவீரர் அலெக்ஸாண்டர் வாழ்க்கை வரலாறு மிக தெளிவாகவும் எளிமையான எழுத்து நடையிலும் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது.

மகா அலெக்ஸாண்டரின் வீர வசனங்கள் சில,

கிரேக்கர்களுக்கு இரண்டு கண்கள். ஆம். மதம், விளையாட்டு என்கிற இரண்டும்தான் அவர்களுடைய கண்கள். அதையும் ஒரே வார்த்தையில் சொல்ல வேண்டும் என்றால் மதம் என்றால் கடவுள் வழிபாடு. விளையாட்டு என்றால் ஒலிம்பிக்.

கிரேக்கர்கள் மது அருந்துவதற்கு முன்னர்கூட இரண்டு சொட்டு மதுவை தரையில் பூமி தெய்வத்துக்கு அர்ப்பணித்துவிட்டுத்தான் அருந்துவார்கள்.


வரட்டும். வந்து பார்க்கட்டும். அதற்காகத்தானே காத்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். வாய்ப்பு ஏற்படாதவரைக்கும் வீரன் என்று எப்படித்தான் மற்றவர்களுக்குப் புரியவைக்க முடியும்?

‘மக்களின் நம்பிக்கையைத் துரும்பளவு இழந்துவிட்டாலும் பிரச்னை என்று வரும்போது அது விஸ்வரூபம் எடுத்துவிடும்’

‘என்னதான் நான் வீரனாக இருந்தாலும் நானும் ஒரு மனிதன். எனக்குள் நிறைய அன்பு இருக்கிறது. கருணை இருக்கிறது. எல்லோரும் நன்றாக வாழ வேண்டும் என்பதுதான் என்னுடைய எண்ணம், விழைவு, எல்லாமே.-அலெக்சாண்டரின்

‘நீ இதைப் பார்த்துக்கொள். அவன் அதைப் பார்த்துக் கொள்ளட்டும். இவன் இதைப் பார்த்துக்கொள்ளட்டும். உங்கள் அனைவரையும் நான் பார்த்துக்கொள்கிறேன்.’ இதுதான் அலெக்சாண்டரின் பாணி.

மூத்தவர்களை மதித்தார். தொழுதார். ஆலோசனைகள் தேவைப்படும்போது கேட்டார். அவர்களாகக் கொடுக்கும்போது பிடித்தால் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டார். மறுதலித்துப் பேசவும் இல்லை. மண்டியிடவும் இல்லை.

வெறுமனே நாடு பிடிக்கும் ஆசையோடு நான் படையெடுப்பில் ஈடுபடவில்லை. நம்முடைய நாகரிகத்தை, கலாசாரத்தை, பெருமைகளை அந்தந்த நாடுகளில் சென்று விதைக்க விரும்புகிறேன். அதேபோல நான் செல்கிற நாடுகளின் பழக்க வழக்கங்கள், அருமை பெருமைகள் எல்லாவற்றையும் உள்வாங்கி, அதை நம்முடைய தேசத்துக்கு அனுப்பிவைக்கவும் விரும்புகிறேன். இதன்மூலம் உலகம் ஒன்றுபடும். -அலெக்சாண்டர்.

‘பயமா? மாசிடோனிய வீரர்களுக்குப் பயமா? அதுவும் இருளைக் கண்டு? ஒன்றைச் சொல்கிறேன். பயப்படும் வீரர்களிடம் போய் அதைச் சொல்லுங்கள். எப்போதுமே எதிரிகளின் எண்ணிக்கையைப் பார்த்து மிரளக் கூடாது. பிரமிக்கக்கூடாது. தேவையற்ற அச்சம், நடுக்கம் கூடவே கூடாது. அப்படிச் செய்தால் உங்களுக்கு இருக்கும் தன்னம்பிக்கையின் அளவு, தைரியத்தின் வீரியம் உங்களையும் மீறிக் குறையத் தொடங்கிவிடும். எவ்வளவு பெரிய படையாக இருந்தாலும் அதற்கென்று ஒரு பலவீனம் இருக்கும். எதிர்பாராத நேரத்தில் எதிர்பாராத வேகத்தில் பலவீனமான இடத்தில் தாக்கினால் எதிரி நிலைகுலைந்துவிடுவார்.-அலெக்சாண்டர்.

‘அன்புமிக்க வீரர்களே, உங்களுடைய உழைப்பு, திறமை எல்லாவற்ப்றையும் வைத்துப் பார்த்தேன். பத்தாண்டுகளாகத் தொடர்ந்து போர். போர். போரைத் தவிர வேறு எதுவுமே நம்முடைய வாழ்க்கையில் இல்லாமல் போய்விட்டது. உடனடியாக உங்களுக்குத் தேவை ஓய்வு மட்டும் அல்ல. குடும்பத்தையும் சந்திக்க வேண்டும். அன்பைப் பரிமாறிக் கொள்ளவேண்டும். குடும்பத்தினரது தவிப்பையும் தணிக்க வேண்டும். புரிகிறது. இதோ இந்த நிமிடமே புறப்படலாம் மாசிடோனியாவுக்கு.’

‘கலப்புத் திருமணங்கள் மூலம் எல்லா மக்களிடமும் ஒற்றுமை மேம்படும். கலாசார உறவு ஏற்படும்.’

அலெக்சாண்டருக்கு தெரியாதது தோல்வியின் ருசி. எதையுமே வெற்றியாகப் பார்த்து மட்டுமே பழகியவர். முதன்முறையாக மரணத்திடம் கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக தோற்றுக் கொண்டிருந்தார். போராட்டம் போதும் என்று தோன்றிய நொடியில் தன் உயிரை வெளியேற அனுமதித்தார்.

‘இந்தக் கல்லறையில் உறங்குபவன், உலகையை வென்றவன் என்று பொறித்து விடுங்கள். ஆனாலும், போகும்போது எதையும் எடுத்துச்செல்லவில்லை என்று எல்லோரும் தெரிந்து கொள்ளவே கைகள் வெளியே தெரியவேண்டும்.’ -அலெக்சாண்டர்.

மாவீரன் அலெக்சாண்டரின் வரலாற்றை அறியும் பொருட்டு முத்துக்குமார் அவர்கள் எழுதிய மகா அலெக்சாண்டர் புத்தகத்தை வாசிக்கும் வாய்ப்பைப் பெற்றேன் மிகவும் எளிமையாகவும் எல்லோருக்கும் புரியும் படியும் பல வரலாற்று தகவலுடன் எப்போ தகத்தை எழுதியுள்ளார் ஒரு மாவீரரின் வரலாற்றை இதற்கு மேலும் எளிமையாக அதிகரிக்க வாய்ப்பில்லை அற்புதமான எழுத்து நடை உண்மையான வரலாற்று சான்றுகள் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன அனைவரும் தவறாமல் படிக்கும் புத்தகங்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று

Just another book, I dont feel a grip of I am reading about a great Alexander.
Every king does the same born, grown up, become prince, then king, went to war won, made love and die. This books talks the same.
As an Alexander what he is, how he is made up (just telling he was trained by Aristotle is not enough). How he read about his opponents, how he himself made a king, etc etc lot of unanswered questions.

2.5 hours of read, explains about Alexander's life and his successions. Quite interesting to read about history of around 350 BC. Author's Tamil narration is easier to read and understand the facts with emotions.

As a beginner in book reading, I never thought I will finish a book in a single day... But this book made me to do that... Simple way of storytelling and it didn't allowed me to stop in middle. Worth reading to get inspire on The Great Alexander!! The greatest conqueror of all time.

It's always interesting to read about the Heros who conquered the world. Though lot of kings came in the history, Alexander stand apart from them. The author could have added few more chapters and more information. Nice book to read!!
