A really cute Valentine's story with an unusual cast of characters--SLUGS! I thought this was an absolutely adorable story about a smitten girl slug who writes Valentines poems (in slime!) for the slug she loves from across a crowded room--er, garden! He is struck by her lovely sentiments but he doesn't know which slug she is (there are so many in the garden1) so writes her a valentine back but, oh dear, he writes it on the garden hoe and the farmer moves it before she ever sees it! Undaunted, s ...more

Two poetically inclined young slugs in love! What could be more romantic? This adorable, hilarious, and ultimately heartwarming book, perfect for Valentine's Day, follows the story of shy Marylou, who - being terribly enamored of her fellow slug Herbie - sets out to woo him through her poems, written (in slime) on everything from a watering can to a scarecrow's hat. Herbie himself, unsure of the identity of his not-so-secret admirer, begins composing poems of his own, hoping to convince Marylou ...more

It's a very cute picture book about two slugs, Herbie and Marylou. They write sweetheart notes to each other, trying to find one another. The notes they write either aren't seen or disappear. Herbie finally gets the idea to write a note that Marylou can't miss. This book is around a third grade reading level; it's also good to read aloud to younger children. Very nice illustrations. ...more

MaryLou loves Herbie but is too shy to tell him out loud.

So begins, a very thoughtful and loving exchange of poems, written on such items as a tomato plant, a scarecrow, a rake, watering can, etc.

Will Herbie and MaryLou every meet?

A wonderful book to be read at Valentines and every day of the year!

Their communication is like an old fashioned personal ad. Very cute!

The reason I mention that is, I met my husband, through placing a personal ad in a newspaper 28 years ago.

A very cute story about two slugs who write poems to one another using their slime trails. Not sure how this could possibly be romantic, but I guess even slugs deserve love too. Fun poems that our girls enjoyed finding the rhyming words to.

Slugs in Love is an easy read, but very enjoyable. The pictures on the pages match the descriptions of the sentences. The sentences include rhyming, which adds to the "fun" of the book. I enjoy the "chase" the two slugs encounter. They go to great heights to find one another and fall in love. ...more

This is a good book for older children who can sit through longer books. (It is quite text heavy).

It can be used to discuss poetry since the two slug main characters write poems.

It is also appropriate for Valentine Day reads.

Kids both enjoyed it.

For most of us, “romantic” and “lovable” are not the first two words that come to mind when we think of slugs. Marylou and Herbie are different.

Cute concept but the execution is repetitive, and not in that great-for-a-read-aloud way. Instead of rising action/tension, we see the same things happening on most spreads: Marylou writes Herbie a love poem in slime, and Herbie can't figure out who she is. Until, eventually (spoiler), he does. ...more

Z picked this out herself. Each missed meeting prompted Z to shout at the book, “If you would just ...” as though the characters could respond to her suggestions. Cute rhyming narrative.

Slug books are fun

A delightful back that captivated my grandchildren and tickled their funny bones. That book led to an adventure of fiction and non-fiction books about slugs.

“Slugs in Love” by Susan Pearson was an adorable book about true love. Marylou loves Herbie but she is really shy so she writes him little love letters all around the slug garden for him to see. Upon seeing these love letters, Herbie can not wait to meet Marylou so he writes her letters back asking to meet her. However, Herbie’s letters never get seen. But Marylou, being very persistent never gives up on Herbie and keeps on writing him about her love for her. Soon enough Herbie and Marylou meet ...more

So cute!

This tale of romance between two slugs is super adorable. I have always had a soft spot for love stories, even ones in picture books.

The writing is clear and concise, with just the right amount of words on each page. The story moves along quickly, so your child isn't likely to get bored with the things that are happening.

I loved the way Marylou kept leaving poems for Herbie all around the garden, and how every time he wrote a poem back to her, something happened so that she wouldn't se

Marylou the slug is in love with Herbie, a fellow slug. She leaves him poems in slime all over the garden. Herbie loves the poems from Marylou, but he can't figure out which slug she is. Every time he leaves her a return poem in slime something happens and it disappears. All the time Marylou is pining over Herbie, he's trying to figure out who she is. In the end they find each other and live happily ever after.

A very cute story, perfect for a Valentine's storytime. My one concern is the the reas

Marylou, what a bold slug woman you are leaving love notes where everyone can see them! The whole writing in your own slime thing is kind of unappealing though, but I guess it's cute in it's own way. You became even more interesting when all of Herbie's friends had never heard of you! How many slugs are in your slug colony that no one knows who you are or even what you look like? You won me over though with your sweet rhymes, and obviously, it worked on Herbie. Congrats on the 7+ slug babies and ...more

These two slugs are in love and writes love letters to one another.

I thought this book was cute. It was a little cheesy, but definitely cute. I read this out loud in my first grade class, and half the children were making gag sounds whenever love lines were spurted out. It was a fun book to read though, the children enjoyed it.
I would use this book if the children has to learn how to write letters. I would also use this book to give children an idea of poetry and rhyming words.

Oh, my gosh! It feels so good to finally post something! I have been so busy at BEA! Can't wait to read all of the new galleys and ARCs I picked up! Plus plenty of new picture books and autographed books as well.
Not sure I ever read this, though I know I have it in paperback at home. Very cute! Love that the slugs write poems back and forth to each other.

Much more to post this week-end!!!
