This is a wonderful humane education resource and belongs on the shelf of every public and school library. Through entertaining and thought-provoking anecdotes, students are invited to ponder whether animals can experience emotions such as joy, cooperation, and even vengefulness.

There were only two minor problems, in which I noted a discrepancy between text and illustrations. A passage about a false killer whale is illustrated with the more familiar image of the black-and-white orca; and a passage about a crow is illustrated by a drawing of a magpie.

I purchased this book for my library.
