Mrs. Brice's Mice
In 1957, Harper published its first I Can Read title, Little Bear, written by Else Holmelund Minarik and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. Large type, simple vocabulary, chapter-like divisions, and decorative pictures made Little Bear perfect for emerging readers-they could read the story comfortably and not feel overwhelmed by the text. Following suit came such classics as Peggy Parish's Amelia Bedelia series, Lillian Hoban's books about Arthur the monkey, and Syd Hoff's popular Danny and the Dinosaur. Many books in this series are special in the depth of emotion evoked - Little Bear, the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel, and Daniel's Duck by Clyde Bulla, to name a few - and all are enjoyed by children of all ages. Preschool - Grade 1.

A cute enough tale of a woman who really loves her meeses to pieces, though definitely not one of Hoff's best.

Pretty fun! He even draws all twenty five mice on a lot of the pages!

I bought a rather large inexpensive lot of vintage children’s books on eBay because there were several among them I wanted, and this was one of the others. It’s a cute story about a woman with 25 pet mice, one of whom is always doing something different. I didn’t realize it until I looked this book up on Goodreads, but it seems author Syd Hoff was quite prolific, and also wrote Danny and the Dinosaur.

I liked how one of the mice didn't do the same things as all the others.

Not one of Hoff's best, but still a short story tale about a woman who loves her brood of mice and one little mouse that stands alone from the others. Not much else to say. My rating - 2/5

A quirky story involving mice, and the smallest one seems to be the smartest one of all.

Mrs. Brice had 25 mice that she treated very well. Twenty-four of them would all predictably do things the same way, but one very small mouse did things differently. On a walk with Mrs. Brice one day they were confronted by a cat. While 24 little mice ran away, the one little mouse did something different. This is a cute story with enjoyable illustrations.

This book was about the daily life of Mrs. Brice and her 25 mice. When she slept, exercised or shopped 24 little mice went with her. But one little mouse did not! This one little mouse is different from the other mice, and chooses to do things his/her own way.
This book is best suited for early readers who enjoys reading fun, fictional stories. The author uses repetitive wording and an intro to irregular plurals to capture the novice reader. She uses this element well.
This book is a great introductory lesson to irregular plurals such as mice and mouse. I could select one of the sentences such as "She has twelve little mice" and "But one little mouse" to compare the differences of the words.

September 30, 2010Mrs. Brice had 25 mice that she took care of. She washed them and dry behind their ears. She fed them cheese, took them shopping with her, and she played music for them. One day as she take her mice to the store a cat started to chase them. The tiniest cat outrun the mice. Mrs. Brice told the cat to go home and leave the mice and she rewarded them with cheese.

This is a cute beginning reader about, well, mice.
Let's face it, nobody buys beginning readers planning to read them again and again and again. They often buy them for the price. This will do the trick nicely for an early reader.

Favorite part: When it says, "One very small mouse kept right on eating," and the cheese looks sooooo yummy! MMM ... I just want to eat that cheese!

This is a great book to use for math workshop using the 25 mice. It is also useful with introducing new animals and new vocabulary words.

April 19, 2012Kindergarten. Quick Read. I think it expresses that it is okay to be yourself, even if being you is different from how everyone else is.

Most of this book has rhyming lines so makes it fun for small listeners. A silly book that little ones will grin and giggle at, especially the littlest mouse.

Pretty straightforward early reader book about Mrs Brice and her 25 mice. 24 of them conform and one is rebellious but saves the day so it's all good. Fun, nice pictures, simple words.
