one of my favorite books as a kid. This book tries to recreate the turn-of-phrase the ancient Egyptians used to tell these stories in modern English. It also puts the stories in a historical context. Very enjoyable read, beautiful illustrations, some might find the turn-of-phrase a bit off putting, though.
This book is a big, colorful juggernaut of Egyptian mythology and I'm so glad I found it in the bargain bin! The illustrations aren't like today's - cutesy or inoffensive. It's violent and hair-raising, but the stories are chunked and accessible for children of 5+. Highly recommend for any ancient civilization enthusiasts :)
It was always such a treat going to the library when I was a child and checking out this book. I checked it out so often I might as well have owned it. This book retells the myths and fables of Ancient Egypt in a clear and easy-to-read manner, making it perfect for children or adults, and the artwork is just magnificent. The awesome image of Anubis standing over the pyramids with his arms folded is forever etched into my memories. Eventually a couple years ago I finally went on Amazon and purchased a copy after not having read it in more than a decade, and was reunited with it, it was as good as I remembered. If you're at all interested in ancient Egypt or mythology in general this book is a must-have.
A nice little book that's not so little. It's larger then normal page size doesn't really deter from the stories and info within unless your looking for something to read on the bus or carpool. The first part of the book contains info on the Gods and Pharaohs, the second part contains stories, myths and legends along with colorful and vivid pictures from the stories.
Geraldine Harris explores not only Egyptian mythology and lore but its sources and historical contexts as well. The result is a rich, engaging dip into Egypt's culture from its beginning through its final decline. Well worth the read!
Beautiful pictures, but I felt as though the text was really dry and stories seemed to be stretched out further than they needed to be. After a while I just skipped around. The art is fantastic however.
Magnificent pictures and great stories. This is perfect for the interested ten year old. I remember drawing after these pictures, and marveling at the mysterious stories.
My favourite book when I was 11 and I remember reading the stories over and over again and looking at the beautiful drawings. This book is worthy of reprint.
