About the author

David was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts and attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. While there, he began illustrating. He is now an award-winning author and illustrator of nearly 200 books beloved by children, parents and librarians across the United States. McPhail has garnered many prestigious awards, including a New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year for Mole Music in 2001. McPhail’s other books include First Flight, which the New York Times praised as “hilarious and helpful”; and Lost!, which was chosen as an American Bookseller Pick of the Lists.

McPhail has four children, three stepchildren, and is a proud grandfather. He is married to Jan Waldron, with whom he has written and illustrated several books. He lives in Rye, New Hampshire.

This is a lovely little story about Big Pig doing a job and Little Pig following in his footsteps. But what is delightful is that Little Pig does his work in a grander way than Big Pig. In the end, they are both happy with what they made. Really well done illustrations. Worth reading more than once, especially to see how the illustrations might tell how the story will continue to move forward. The activity at the end didn't impress me. It doesn't seem to further young people's ability to read well or interpret the story well.

This story details how the big pig will try and do something, and the little pig will then do exactly the same thing. This happens no matter what the task might be. This story is meant for early readers. The illustrations are simplistic, the words repetitive, all aimed at helping young readers begin to read by familiarizing them with the words in the book. This is a great book that I would use to help kids not only read, but teach them the principle that bigger people are often role models for the younger and small people, and therefore it is necessary you act like a good person.

It was funny! Whatever the big pig did, the little pig did. It was all about the pigs being hot and making a pool, and I think it was funny that the big pig's pool was smaller and the little pig's pool was bigger. He used a whole thing of buckets, and big pig only used one bucket. Then they sat in them, and it was so funny.
