Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Microbiology

Students and faculty alike have attested to the extraordinary success rate of the Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews--the unparalleled review texts that clarify the essentials students need to know for the Boards through an easy-to-use outline format and illustration program. Now, this series has been expanded to include a complete and current review of microbiology. Designed and edited by top educators, the book helps the student tie together the "visual" and "cognitive" elements of learning for superior recognition and recall. More than 600 pictures and diagrams, carefully crafted to complement and amplify the text, are completely integrated with the text. Board-type questions, with detailed explanations of the answers, are included with each chapter. A series of illustrated case studies is also included.

Poorly organized, this Lippincott is disappointingly basic for a microbiol review text. It's doubtful that potential readers will either need or benefit from a review of bacterial conjugation or where on the body S. epidermis tends to populate. The author fails to present important insight on various pieces of information; e.g. it is mentioned that Chlamydiaceae are "not routinely stained with Gram stain" without noting why -- whilst the peptidoglycan paradox is an essential piece of knowledge for any student of microbiology. Discourse on multiple drug resistant bacteria is also lacking, particularly in the section regarding M. tuberculosis.

I read this book twice, once for microbiology course and the other for infectious diseases course, I find it a very good book for medical students, it is written in a nice, simple way, there are graghs and summeries at the end if each chapter and at the end of the book, there is also clinical cases and summery about the diseases...etc at the end of each chapter there are few mcq questions about the pathogens in that chapter
