The original Red Room, not a place of sexual kinks, but instead a place of terror. The name of this room just sounds like an ominous place, I sure as hell wouldn't spend a night in it.

This story has amazing imagery and the tension built in it makes your heart race! Being very short sighted, at night when I have to take my glasses off, everything becomes a dark, menacing blur, so this novel played on my fear of the dark really well.

Very scary, I'm glad I didn't read this before bed.

Classic Gothic Horror - or maybe a subversion of the genre. I listened to a reading of this on the SFF Audio podcast. Simon Vance was excellent as the narrator and he also participated in the discussion on the podcast.

One of the things I really liked about this book (apart from it only taking 24 minutes to get through) is the horror is all or maybe almost all psychological. The story succeeds at building a mental tension and atmosphere that I usually only get in film of the same genre. The feel

When I was a kid, there was this one time when I woke up in the middle of the night and the pile of clothes on my chair looked suspiciously like some deformed monster, and I quickly dove under the covers. Fortunately, I'm really good at the whole sleeping thing, so I fell asleep quickly. I also used to have an irrational fear of vampires for a few days when I was little, which made me cover my neck every night when I went to bed, but that's a different story. I rarely had any troubles with sleep ...more

The Red Room: by H.G. Wells is a horror story about a scientific-minded man who plans to debunk the myth of a haunted room. He enters in the darkness of night, of course, and proceeds to apply the scientific method to what he sees. However, it does not go as planned.

Wells is not only a pioneer of Science Fiction, but he is the master of imagery. "A montrous shadow of him crouched upon the wall," is the description of the old man who is present as he is given the instructions on how to find the r

I read this as a light warm-up after a two-week hiatus, not realising that the last book I had read before the hiatus was The Blue Room by Georges Simenon. Most amusing~

I’ve been reading old stories now available as e-books and this is one of them. I love the language of the time, the embroidered descriptions. The creeping sense of dread before the sceptic even reaches the haunted room he intends to sleep in overnight.
‘I put down my empty glass on the table and looked about the room, and caught a glimpse of myself, abbreviated and broadened to an impossible sturdiness, in the queer old mirror at the end of the room.’ Wonderful language.

I had to read this for school - otherwise I wouldn't have. The plot was ok and all, it was just that because of all the description, I found it really hard to get into - because I don't know about anyone else, but personally, if a story has loooooooong descriptions with lots of complex words and phrases, you can't get into it. I liked how the narrator shows the traditional Victorian veiw towards some of the characters, that unless your young, smart and educated, you're a waste of space - but the ...more

less a book, more a short story really.

However, the unnamed narrator stays in an named house to check out an apparently haunted room.

He starts out logical and confident, but during the story becomes unnerved and scared as the candles he has lit are snuffed out, individually at first and then en mass. Soon he is reduced to a wreck and changes his mind about the room.

Excellent short story and good for a scary read

I received a free kindle copy of The Red Room by H.G. Wells in an Amazon promotion. I gave it four stars.

It's a haunting tale & deals with fear of ghosts. It also deals with the element of fear itself. H.G. Wells has a masterful touch in making the ordinary furnishings seem frightening.

A very interesting gothic take on the classic ghost story by the master of SF. The repetition that the three elders use to set the scene is some of the most unsettling dialogue in English. We learn very little of our protagonist, except his age and that he doesn't believe in ghosts at the start of the story. His bravado and daring lead him to challenge not only the elders "On this night of all nights." And it nearly leads him to his doom.

So the narrator decides to spend the night in this castle, the Lorraine Castle, where he will sleep in the room, called the Red Room, which is said to be haunted. Now the castle has three weird very old occupants, who say explain the whole haunted thing to the guy. Well he says he doesn't believe them and goes to the room, but has strange experiences all night which he insists are all just as a result of his fears.

Interesting and exciting short story!!

A classic gothic tale, our narrator spends the night in the 'Red room' and declares that in his eight and twenty years of being alive he has never seen a ghost. With the three occupants of the building declare he may have not seen a ghost in his life YET.

This short tale revolves around fear, especially of the unknown which could lead to some interesting things.

A real spine chilling horror story by the great H.G. Wells. I wonder if this story inspired Stephen King to write his '1408'. Coz both stories have lot of similarities. Its a dreadful thing to get stuck in a pitch black room which has a history of haunting. Coming from someone like Wells, I knew this story would be good. And it didn't let me down.

Classic #horror short story that reminds us where the true suspense can be found in such works--and it's not in bloody, slasher work.

Highly recommend to horror fans, horror novelists, and those in the film industry who work in the genre.

Although I rarely read short stories, and have never read a book on the Kindle app, when I came across this while looking for a book with an identical title by Ridley Pearson, I knew I had to read it. Quite enjoyable story by H.G. Wells.

This story just goes to prove that a story doesn't need to be filled with gore to be scary. A bit of atmosphere and the reader's own imagination will provide all of the thrills that you need to have a truly scary read.

A good one. Some real horror stuff from Wells. I also prefer darkness or evil over personal ghosts. It's better that way. More fun. This story offers decent share of screams and nightmares. And that stuff with candle was really good. My rating is 3.5.

In 1866, (Herbert George) H.G. Wells was born to a working class family in Kent, England. Young Wells received a spotty education, interrupted by several illnesses and family difficulties, and became a draper's apprentice as a teenager. The headmaster of Midhurst Grammar School, where he had spent a year, arranged for him to return as an "usher," or student teacher. Wells earned a government schol ...more
