A summary of my reactions while reading this selection from my Library Sale Romance Book Haul (genre: paranormal suspense):

1. I’m in the mood for a fun romance novel.
2. Talk about insta-love.
3. Holy cultural appropriation, Batman!
4. On second thought, this is too dumb to successfully appropriate anyone’s culture. Carry on.
5. So…the evil Skinwalkers are running a pharmaceutical scam? That’s how they’re going to destroy all that’s good in the world? (Are Pfizer and Eli Lilly in on this plot? I sure hope I didn’t just start an internet conspiracy theory with this review.)
6. So…there was no reason Ben had to be celibate? It was just a plot device? It’s almost like a league of celibate medicine men fighting evil is a dumb idea.
7. When will this book be over? Seriously questioning my life choices now.
8. Wait, what? That dude just shifted into a vulture? You mean I could have been reading a badass book about vulture shifters this whole time?? On no, he just got shot out of the sky. Carry on.
9. The epilogue is in sight!!!
10. Welp, that wasn’t the stupidest thing I’ve ever read. But I kind of feel like the Book Gods owe me a vulture shifters romance to make up for it now.

Very good read, loved it. A lot of Native American, Navajo, mystic lore. This is part of the "Night Guardian" series. It is a Harlequin Romance also.

Sadly yet another that's going in my give away pile. I seem to be pulling a lot lately that have totally unlikable characters. In this one we have a heroine who refuses to keep an open mind about the culture of a man she supposedly loves. She continuously says she'll listen so she can help more people but right up til the end she remains completely ethnocentric. The hero isn't much more appealing since several times he decides to throw caution to the wind regardless of the heroine's feelings in the long run. The romance was awkwardly done. Push and pull and then magic resolve with no real conflict to get them there. It's just like boom everything standing in their way magically disappeared...but it was never really explained how they got there. The sex scenes aimed for the poetic and were almost there...but they didn't really do much for me otherwise. The plot was interesting but again awkwardly done. We have a whole book of ridiculous amounts of buildup...then we dont even get to see the big battle scene. WTH is up with that?! I just felt like there was a lot of unnecessary details that could've easily been eliminated for a quicker read. For instance, the plot twist could be seen from a mile away so the red herring plot detour just cluttered the book up. The writing overall was solid no mistakes and other than what i've already mentioned no flaws.
Bottom line: really nothing about this book worked for me. The characters don't fit together which ruins the romance. The plot was poorly paced and cut out the climactic scene. Not one I'd recommend

Umm, Harlequin. Okay tale that was well-researched. Not for me. =)
