As I love tales of dystopian or post-apocalyptic words, I chanced upon "The Beautiful Death", a new 5-part series from French creator Mathieu Bablet. This is titled La Belle Mort in French, which undoubtedly sounds more enticing. I glanced at a few scenes and was immediately reminded of some classic horror manga by the Japanese legend which is Kazuo Umezu, as well as the great Junji Ito.

Basically, this is a tale set on our planet, where insects of varying sizes have taken over and humanity, as w

First of all, beautifully illustrated: a lovely, detailed and singular style (especially good in the city landscapes and character expressions) with a clever colour palette, only occasionally losing control of storytelling.

After a fantastically misdirected opening, for the first couple of issues, a slow and haunting tale of survivors in a ravaged city, scavenging and hiding from inevitable, if unseen, invaders. Then something happens; story and character elements go unexplained, the focus shifts

The art is lovely and strange (especially the huge cityscapes with giant bugs) but the story hops around too much to be really enjoyable. Its also crazy bleak. Buuuuuut, if you like post apocalypse fiction &/or bugs this might be the graphic novel for you!
Dean Simons
A pretty solid 3 stars. The art is splendid, the story drifts all over the place then attempts to coalesce into something cliched. It probably needed more planning as there is a lot missing that would make the characters remotely interesting and the scenario more fulfilling.

This story bored me. There was some potential, but each time it got me interested, it would promptly take a turn to push me away again. Decent art, though nothing too memorable. Finally, there were a few instances where it was puzzling to follow, one of the setbacks to the presumably lesser editing that goes into indie comics.
