Fiona graduated from Exeter University with a B.Ed. (Hons.), specialising in Psychology and Art and Design. After university she worked as a researcher and writer for a company which published educational material for places where children went on school visits (zoos, museums, stately homes etc). She then taught seven, eight, and nine year olds for five years; three years at a state school in Sevenoaks in Kent, and two years at The British School in the Netherlands in The Hague.
Having joined Usborne in 1989, Fiona became an editorial director in 2003, largely responsible for writing baby and novelty books, as well as art and activity titles. She has written over 100 titles for Usborne Publishing, perhaps most notably the, ‘That’s not my ….‘ touchy-feely series.

I love these Usborne craft books. They're beautifully presented and chocka with great ideas that are well-explained, achievable, and you don't have to buy lots of specialist equipment to use. Making Cards is no different. To give you an idea of what it's like, allow me to break it down for you.
Equipment/Materials Needed:
- card or thick paper
- paper in different colours; wrapping paper (optional); old magazines (optional)
- pencil; standard and colouring
- ruler
- scissors
- paint
- paintbrush
- craft knife (though you could manage with scissors in most cases IMHO)
- felt tips
- fountain pen or thin black and blue felt tips
- foil (but only really necessary for one of the cards)
- glue
- metallic gel pen (only used for one card)
- tissue paper
- seed beads (only used for a couple of cards)
- scrap material; needle; thread (only used for a couple of cards)
- glitter glue
- small pieces of cardboard (to use for embossing and one paint technique)
- an old toothbrush
- a paper doily (optional)
- buttons (two cards)
I tend to think that anyone into a bit of crafting will have just about all of these laying around the house. Even if you don't there is nothing specialist or particularly expensive to buy. You don't have to buy fancy paper - you're shown techniques on how to make your own textured paper with paint. You're shown how to emboss cards and envelopes with just a piece of cardboard and the end of a paintbrush. You're shown exactly where to cut and fold for different pop ups... And when you've managed the techniques, you're shown how to adapt them for other ideas, including your own. Oh, and how to make a variety of styles of envelopes to pop your fancy cards in.
