Brilliant story telling!!! The way he carries the story, and jumps from one to the next is addictive. I hated the abrupt end, but still I enjoyed the book to the most! I can't wait to read another novel for the author, he's very capable of pinning you down to his work. ...more

Tbh I didn’t finish this one, I couldn’t, i tried so hard! The story is promising and all, its just i have a huge difficulty reading in arabic. Cant seem to get into the mood of the book or enjoy it. Its not for the beauty of the arabic language, but out of habit of me reading English only books and novels.

for the first time I find that goodreads rating isn't fair!

the book was lengthy and there so much of abusing scenes. Unfortunately, there just the author's point of veiw, and it was more into politics than ethical sides. alot of incidents was forced into the story which made it a dull and a completely boring right from p 300 till the end of it. ...more

A very rich book that takes you to unfamiliar places with unexpected series of events. It will succeed in grabbing your full attention from the beginning until the end of the book. I enjoyed reading the book very much.

It’s different, I liked very much the parts about Samarkand and depicting the struggles of muslims there, it was really written beautifully and was an eye opener, though dragged a little. The biggest drawback for me was the loose link between Ali’s and Nour Allah stories, it didn’t convince me.

At the beginning, honestly I was not very approving of the excessive sexuality.
And out of sincere truth I am not a fan of Arabian novels but Mr Qendeel gave me a whole different idea and perspective.
He wrote in such a marvelous way that attracts till the end, also with an ending that leaves you with many questions... Open ending.
Beside the fact of using the flashbacks to tell stories and intertwining many stories in between.
In addition, he supported a lot of parts with actual geography and hist

It was truly on the best novels I've read during during 2013.
I loved the writer's way of expressing the feelings of both "Ali" and "Nour Allah", how he described Samarkand, and even the historical facts throughout the whole novel. If you like reading about different cultures mixed with different human experiences...then this novel is definitely for you.

Cheers!

One of the best arabic stories I have ever read; from the arabic language prespective. The best describtion I liked in the book:
شعرها بلون بذرة المشمش

The versionI read was printed in Dar ElHelal, there were some typos in the book unfortunately.

The story is, or more accurately the stories are, captivating, mainly because of how descriptive the narration is. However, there is no message or even a united story. Just small problems and mysteries left unsolved.
