The opening line in this book says it all: "In these pages, you will meet heroes." As I begin team teaching a series of peacemaking classes, based on this book, in Ann Arbor, Michigan (with both church people and University of Michigan students)--the relevance of this book is crystal clear.
The organization of the book is simple: More than 80 men and women who risked becoming peacemakers are profiled. The book is arranged by the disciplines they followed. Perhaps they were theorists, or they were teachers. Perhaps they were activists, or they were peacemakers through art and music. The book is great to read as a three-month daily devotional. The book is religiously diverse, and some peacemakers pursued their vocation through secular means, but each story is both compelling and inspiring.
Since the book was published some months ago, we have seen regular updates in headlines about some of the figures in this book. One of the recent Nobel Peace Prize winners is profiled here. The irreverent artist Banksy is profiled here. Vaclav Havel, who died this past year, is profiled.
This is more than just another warmly inspirational book. It's a call to action and many who have opened the covers seem to agree with me. We've had eager participation in the Ann Arbor classes, and discussion groups are springing up in other parts of the U.S. as well.

This collection of peacemakers from across the world was truly eye-opening, impressive, and inspiring. So many people with such courage and conviction, who stood up to seemingly impossible odds to bring about hope and change. The short profiles were well-written, just long enough to pique my interest, and very diverse - I felt like I learned more about history and the world today in general by reading it. Peacemakers in Spanish-speaking countries (Oscar Romero from El Salvador, Victor Jara from Chile, the Mothers of la Plaza de Mayo in Argentina, the hunger-striking Bolivian women, and many others) were particularly relevant and interesting for me to read about.
