Cool Bopper is a bebopper in the Snazzy Catz Jazz Club, losses his choppers in the beboppin' crowd. Like Charlie Parker, Cool Bopper bops hard below silver stars and blue moons of night. One evening, Cool Bopper puts down his saxophone and begins to scat: "A-BOP-BOP-BE-BOP, A-BOP-BOP-BOP!" And out pop his choppers! Now Cool Bopper is not the same without his choppers. He can't bop. He can't scat. He can't blow his horn. How will Cool Bopper regain his choppers? Linda Oatman High's jazzy story, with zany illustrations by John O'Brien, takes young beboppers on a wild adventure with rhythm and wordplay.
A story of a saxophonist who loses his teeth and then loses his bebop, and how he recovered them both. Kinda an interesting start, but also just a little weird for me. As a storytime read... only with a lot of practice beforehand! It might be a fun one to include in a music storytime, but the poety flow is jazzy itself. It's like reading scat jazz lyrics. Which, if you've ever tried, is pretty challenging, unless you know what rhythm you're going for. The illustrations are interesting. Very, very stylized and fluid. I did like how he literally turned blue when he lost his bebop. Overall, though, a bit weird for me, and certainly a challenging read (or one requiring a lot of rehearsal). There are other books I'd pull out first for a music theme storytime, though this wouldn't be a bad addition if you wanted.
I can't wait to use this for storytime! It has a cool beat and jazzy rhymes! It makes me want to do a storytime all about TEETH!!! Okay...it would work for a stoytime about jazz too...Susan didn't you do one about Jazz?
