The freedom of the range, the bawling of the longhorns, the lonesome night watch beneath a vast, starry sky--they get into a man's blood until he knew there was nothing better than the life of a cowboy ... except the love of a good woman.
MARINA Devastated by a ruthless betrayal, disillusioned by the War Between the States, Ward Dillon swore he'd escape his bitter past and start anew ... even if he had to abandon his heart's desire. So the San Antonio doctor traded his medical practice for the rugged life of the open trail, refined society for the company of rough-and-ready cowpokes. Yet what hope, what harmony, what hint of happiness could be his without the woman he'd left behind, the beauty who haunted his dreams? And when Marina tracked Ward down on the windswept Texas plains, how could he resist the burning brand of passion that had once brought them searing ecstasy and promised the only peace possible for his embattled heart?
Whenever I see a man has written romance, I need to read the book in question. This one was no exception. I must have found it under the secret baby list as I used to be so obsessed with that trope. I think I added this book in 2018 when I was super into that trope.
The only way to read this book is to buy a copy of it, so I bought one. I wasn't happy when it came in mass-market paperback format, but I was able to read it more easily than the last mass-market paperback I DNFed (yesterday). Unfortunately, the seller put a load of stickers on the back. I peeled them off, but it tore part of the synopsis and left the back with sticky residue.
Now on to the book: I loved the first 100 pages or so, especially the meet-cute.
Marina and Ward fall in love almost immediately, but it's okay as Ward's evil mother spews lies, separating the two for--wait for it--seven years!! .
It took the two a while to work out the past and their feelings for each other. It took a while too for Ward to realize that his family had lied to him, at least partially.
Half the book dealt with a cholera outbreak, but that was interesting. A mountain lion attack was also interesting.
When Leigh Greenwood solely wrote that the two made love three times during their honeymoon, I thought the book would be clean, but it wasn't. There was at least one fingering scene, and Ward seemed to be a fan of licking her ear, lol.
I am completely in love with this series!....They are so funny and good characters.... My problem with this one is Marina's conflict with herself dragged the story at some point... I know trusting completely is a hard decision especially when it involves her future after all that she had been through... But still I hope the story didn't contain to much about her doubt and troubles.... it occupies too much...
I wanted to like this one as much as the first, but I couldn't. For one, age gaps get on my nerves. Two, instalove is wild. I could've done without Ward's story. He wasn't really a brother *shrug*
I read this novel, a hard copy in 2008 and I was so fascinated by it. I have been trying to get another hard copy here in Kenya but in vain. Am happy that at long last, I can read it as many times as possible
Great, entertaining book .... and you HAVE TO stay with the novel "till the very end". I have read three of THE COWBOY SERIES (#2, #10 & #11). Of the three, this book "Ward" is by far the best of the three. Also, I enjoyed the author's occasional metaphoric descriptions (i.e. "That tongue-lashing had enough salt in it to cure a good-sized ham" [chapter 9] ; "the fire in her eyes could have singed the hide off a buffalo" [chapter 16]).
Wasn't sure about this story when it first started because it starts out with Ward & Marina falling in love the second they meet and getting married like literally the next day and so I kind of just rolled my eyes and almost hated continuing on (I've never really found a book I've cared for much where the characters fall in love right from the start of the story). But, I was pleasantly surprised, the book ended up actually being really good. So good in fact I literally read it in one day! And could probably have had it read in a matter of hours (In a little over 2hrs I had half of it read) if I could have sat down and read with no interuptions instead of reading it a little here and there when I got the chance.
