Hannah Marie invites her Scary Godmother and all her monster friends from the Fright Side to her neighborhood Halloween block party, but the Scary Godmother gets another invitation from an unknown admirer as well.
Jill Thompson is an American comic book writer and illustrator. Probably best known for her work on Neil Gaiman's Sandman characters and her own Scary Godmother series, she has also worked on The Invisibles, Swamp Thing, Wonder Woman and more recently, Beasts of Burden.
The best art yet. Mostly set in Frightside and featuring a ton of different monsters, including a biker Frankenstein and a werewolf who loves snacks. Lots of little details here and there. It’s brimming with Halloween atmosphere.
The plot is very simple. The kids are planning a big Halloween block party. Jimmy feels lefts out, but promises to bring a big surprise. The Scary Godmother gets a note from a secret admirer. Hannah and Orson the vampire boy try to find out who it is, leading them on a chase all over monster land. After they flatter all the monsters, the monsters turned suitors convene at SG’s house and cause all sorts of mayhem, such as popping out of her oven on fire when she tries to make fries.
SPOILER
But none of them wrote the note. Finally Halloween comes. At the block party, SG waits for her admirer in vain. The kids have a great time. Finally the admirer shows up — JImmy! His surprise is bringing SG as a date. Everyone parties and SG provides a cake.
THE END
The story is designed for maximum illustration opportunities; most of the appeal is visual. The plot is built around a simple mystery with a single twist.
As the third book in her Scary Godmother series, I admit to being a bit disappointed in the lackluster plot. Perhaps she ran out of clever ideas. Or maybe she was rushing to get this to the printers. Whatever the case, I’m hoping that the two additional stories collected in her recently printed omnibus – which I also checked out -- are an improvement. After all, Thompson’s art is top-notch, and her quasi-Nightmare Before Christmas parallel universe is beyond cute.
A wonderful picture book. Sary godmother must discover who would like to take her to the party.scary god mother is a joy to read about, and I know you will enjoy this book!
