This is a curious book. The title sets out its ambitions in unambiguous terms – using the insights gained from Gramsci’s approach to analysing the historical conjuncture and applying this the phenomenon of New Labour. Splendid idea – I was really looking forward to it.

Instead what we have here is a story of a group of talented, left aligned intellectuals finding themselves in a peculiar place in British society at the crossroads moment when the Thatcherite project began to roll out. That place w
