This is a groundbreaking work, even for Ganeri's always extremely high standards. There are at least three ways in which The Lost Age of Reason breaks new ground.

First, in the first two parts of the book Ganeri has compiled evidence about the intellectual and even political contexts of the philosophers in question to a degree that's unthinkable for earlier Indian philosophers. Its about the development of what we'd call "modern" philosophy, developing natively in India. Sufis (the establishment thinkers), Jains (isolates) and Navya Nyaya Hindus (former establishment, now in internal exile) developing schools of thought which simultaneously affirm the unity of all matter and consciousness, while also adopting hard rationalism and empiricism. This is work builds upon Ganeri's volume on Classical Indian Philosophy. He aims to show that amidst a backdrop of cross-cultural exchange of the various groups in India, a rich "Navya Nyaya" emerged. Highly recommend this for those who want to break from the common conception of Indian philosophy and want to situate it in the socio-political context of its time.
