This is a "must own, must read (multiple times), and must consult regularly" work for anyone studying and/or teaching in the field of Revolutionary America. Comps students, this is your Bible to the revolutionary era!

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone besides history graduate students and maybe high school teachers because it is a purely historiographical study. The book is broken down into two essays about the 20th century historiography of the American Revolution. The first essay charts responses to the Jameson/Becker theses (the American Revolution as a political revolution with major social consequences/the American Revolution as a struggle for home rule and who would rule at home).
