At the beginning of this year one of my bookolutions was to keep exploring SF, YA and horror as I'd really enjoyed the first steps I'd set within these genres in 2010. So when author Darren J Guest contacted me to review Dark Heart I jumped at the chance based on the flap text above. The book sounded really cool and right up my alley, so when it also turned out to be a horror novel I was doubly pleased. And after reading the book I was even more pleased as I really enjoyed this further foray int ...more

Darren J Guest’s debut novel is an enthralling, if sometimes frustrating mix of dark fantasy and psychological horror.

It’s the story of Leo, a man with a troubled past, haunted by memories of his brother Davey’s childhood murder and by his complex relationships with friends and family. With few people to turn to he finds himself getting most of his advice from a photograph of Sean Connery as James Bond.

But that's only the start of his problems, a fight with friend John has tragic consequences an

'Dark Heart' is an enthralling debut thriller from Guest. It is filled with brilliant plot twists, an amazing combination of laugh out loud, touching and chilling moments as well as having an effective narrative that doesn't tear away from the story. Unlike a lot of other books in its genre, 'Dark Heart' doesn't drag the ambiguity out too much, but keeps you guessing and feeling genuinely surprised by the way the story takes you.
The one criticsism I do have is that the hero is seemingly magicall

What a fantastic book.

It's rare for me that I find a book that captivates me to the extent that I'll finish it within four days but here we are!

I'll start off with the positive points of this book. The characters were very interesting individuals. They all had their own personalities and their own traits which really helped shape and define them. Too many books out there have two-dimensional characters and fortunately this book wasn't one of them. The main character, Leo Stamp, is one flawed ind

This book gave me the kind of shiver I only get when I know I've found something special.

From the outset, the story upsets expectations.
Quite literally, anything could happen. And it does.
If I summarised the book, you wouldn't believe it.
But the story roots itself in the normal, the everyday, and carries you with it as the shocking, unbelievable and extreme turn everything upside down and inside out.
You put this book down and start thinking.
You can't help it. It stays with you.
The depth, the hum

This novel is classified as horror, which is not a genre I usually find myself reading but I gave it a shot. In Dark Heart, I couldn't find the hook. Nothing really grabbed my attention enough to want to keep reading. I only continued because I like to give every book a fair chance in the hopes that they get better. It could be that I just didn't pick up on the finite details that may make the story more suspenseful and interesting. Instead, I found myself not wanting to read on because I was bo ...more

Wasn't a fan of this book. The ideas contained in this book were interesting, but I don't feel like we really had enough time with any of the characters for any true development. I personally find it difficult to enjoy a book where none of the main characters are overly likeable. I can see that this was point and that the story was meant to show that everyone is flawed, but likewise has a chance at redemption. There were some complex developments that weren't given enough time & explanation, ...more

Nothing new with good versus evil theme but sadly it lost its way a bit. Decent try though.
