“The guerrilla fights the war of the flea, and his military enemy suffers the dog’s disadvantages: too much to defend; too small, ubiquitous, and agile an enemy to come to grips with.” With these words, Robert Taber began a revolution in conventional military thought that has dramatically impacted the way armed conflicts have been fought since the book’s initial publicatio ...more

Taber's thorough examination of the (mainly Marxist) revolutions of the first half of the twentieth-century provided him the almost prophetic ability to foresee the United State's loss of the war in Vietnam as all but inevitable. He also correctly foresaw future troubles in South and Central America, though his details just missed the bullseye in the case of several countries. The most important tenant of this book, though, is not that revolutions are inevitable - they are - but that they can on ...more

great book, displayed various examples of successful "flea wars" and other failure ones, with the causality of the success and failure of each; I felt as if reading a tutorial.
The book helped me understand some aspects of the current war in Syria-Iraq, I see a kind of similarity between what ISIL is doing and what the book says. Don't exclude the fact the the founders of ISIL have read it (just as Abu Mus'ab Al-Sury)

Explores the history of revolutions and the strong association and role of guerrilla warfare in it. Identifies space, time and will as the 3 main components of a revolutionary war. While the analogy is that of flea beating the dog it also identifies that "To be successful, the guerrilla must be loved and admired. To attract followers, he must represent not merely success, but absolute virtue, so that his enemy will represent absolute evil."

In large part, this book is a summary of Mao's Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung, which itself contains a lot of information lifted from Lao Tzu's The Art of War. So this book is a summary of a summary. It was first published in 1965, when American actions were ramping up in Vietnam. The book gives neither support nor disdain for the Viet Cong, but is rather a manual describing tactics, like Clausewitz's On War.

The book, written well before the Americans pulled out of Vietnam, is prescient

Taber's manual on guerilla warfare has not aged well with time. The book is basically a summary of Maoist views on warfare, taking into account some input from the works of Guevara and Vo Nguyen Giap. The book is incredibly generous in terms of its predictions of the inevitability of the success of revolutions across the developing world, and the lack of the ability of the West or United States to co-opt or contain the inevitable spread of third world Marxism. Additionally, Taber refuses to admi ...more

...more

Taber's exploration of 20th Century guerrilla warfare brings much to the table in considering 21st Century terrorism. Much has changed, much has not. Proletarian freedom fighters and their socio-political revolutions have faded in the face of global capital triumphalism. And the asymmetrical warfare of today, is waged by radical jihadists. The struggle and conflict of class has been usurped by holy war. But the classic rules of guerrilla warfare are easily read in the actions of global terror. L ...more

Think of this book as the theoretical connection between Huntington's 'Political Order in Changing Societies', Galula's 'Counterinsurgency Warfare', Friedman's concept of 'the golden straight jacket' and last but not least and one more conceptual model that I can not remember (it may very well just be a lot of econometric research on civil conflict). A nice explanation from the 60's about how insurgencies develop, why they develop and tactically how they are fought. Complete with analysis of Mao ...more

It was a well-written analysis and description of the successes and failures of guerrilla efforts around the world in the context of when it was written-1965. Particularly well written in that it synthesizes not only modern guerrilla warfare efforts but the wisdom of classic war theorists, such as Suun Tzu. While the information is somewhat dated as technology has advanced and modern guerrilla efforts are somewhat different, the classic and universal knowledge of warfare is displayed immensely w ...more

A Bible of Guerrilla fighters, Taber produced this handbook both as a manual as well as a history. His poignant focus on the then-currently unfolding Vietnam Civil War has come to prove his thesis that Guerrilla Warfare is the strongest method with which to fight modern imperialism...
I recommend this book both to the world's peoples' movement as well as sociologists and students alike as a historical study.

Good analysis of guerrilla warfare from 1965. Predicted the victory of the Viet Cong. First hand understanding of the Cuban revolution.
But Taber was analyzing a trend at its peak and extrapolating wildly from there. He didn't realize that his own analysis would help the right-wingers of Latin America figure out how to stop Che's attempt to export Cuba's revolution.

A high-quality overview of the theory and practice of guerrilla warfare, from someone who was there watching it happen. Can be a little repetitive at times, and is fairly thin, but it still is a requirement for understanding the process of popular insurrection that leads to the victory of insurgents over forces with significantly greater military power.

Did not learn anything new regarding the mechanics of guerrilla warfare but the book had very good anecdotal accounts of the Cuban revolution and critiques on revolutionary guerrilla warfare that failed.

Robert Taber traveled to Cuba in the late 1950s as a CBS investigative journalist to cover the country’s burgeoning revolutionary movement.

He became an eyewitness to history as he marched from the Sierra Maestra to Havana with the ragtag revolutionaries, led by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, who forced Batista to flee the country..
