Lizzie Kershaw had an awful hard life first with her mam who treated lizzie really bad and then getting married to Sam who was really appaling to lizzie she had a really hard life but managed to escape from Sam but he found her again and the cruelty started again but she never have up . 5 STARS for a very good read from Anna .
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, so much so I have bought the next in the series (Our Polly) and intend to read it next. This novel focused on many issues including; domestic violence, effects of war on families and war-time relationships. If you enjoy novels based during the years of the First World War and the difficulties and inequalities of those times, then try this. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed,
🌟rating because every book by this author deserves this. The courage and grit and determination of Lizzie was amazing without it she would never have servived with a hateful mother and violent husband she got through this terrible ordeal with heart felt help from her sisters and the Deardens family how courageous was that.So heart breaking and heartwarming in the end.Thank you Anna Jacobs. Can't wait to read Our Polly.
Another great story by Anna Jacobs the first in series of 4. Set before and during WW1 . I'm looking forward to the next instalment. I listened to it on Audible and the narrator took a lot of getting used to especially the voice she used for Lizzie. I noticed that the rest of the series have different narrators.
I usually find Anna Jacobs’ books an easy read but I found this one a slog! This is my opinion only but I thought it dragged along with not many redeeming storylines. I finished it but only because I don’t like giving up on a book and I was holding out hope that it would become more interesting
Easy read of love stories and war, again. I am impressed with the imagination to write this many books with the same theme.
Lizzie has a hell of a life with her mother Meg, her husband Sam. But her lovely sister Polly is there to support her, as well her older brother. And she gets to happiness in the end.
Loved reading the lives of all the people. Just like being a fly on a wall in their homes. Read this book in 3 days, just couldn’t wait to read on and into the lives, thought about the people when I wasn’t reading the book.
Anna Jacobs books are always a pleasant read and this one was just as good. It was a bit of a slow start for me, but I enjoyed the storyline, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
This was a good read. It was interesting and I liked the characters. I like Anna Jacobs books. They are easy to read and always have a good story behind them.
The first in the Kershaw Sisters series tells the story of the eldest Kershaw sister, Lizzie She has an independent spirit despite the times and her circumstances. She makes an ill-advised marriage in order to escape her harsh home life. However, she quickly discovers that she has married a selfish and violent man. When she finds herself compelled to runaway she is befriended by some suffragettes and escapes to Manchester to work in a munitions factory during World War 1. Unfortunately, her husband finds her and takes her back home. It is only when his violence causes her to lose their unborn baby that Lizzie really finds the strength to make things change, and to find happiness with a man who loves her. It is a difficult read at times from the verbal and physical abuse she receives from her mother on the death of her father and the almost incessant violence she receives from her abusive husband. At times it feels relentless reading this part of the story.

This book is set in London during World War II. It is one of the more heart wrenching stories I have read recently. Almost to the point of being over the top. I love Anna Jacobs as an author though, so I suffered through.
Anna Jacobs is my favourite author as I love her historical, romantic and easy writing that gets me wrapped up in the 1800's. Our Lizzie is the 1st in a series of 4 stories of the same family and didn't disappoint.
I noticed this at the library as my name is also Kershaw and i loved the story, I quickly read all the books in this series and since then i have read every Anna Jacobs books. She is a great story teller.
